Wow! What a great turnout for Jump Rope for Heart on Wednesday. Thank you to everyone that came out and had fun with us at this event for a great cause, the American Heart Association. I want to send a special thank you to Jenny Murray, Dorothy VanGorder, and Mark McCullor for coordinating the event. It is not too late to make a donation; please go online (www.heart.org/jump) or send in a check made payable to the American Heart Association by Monday. 100th Day

I know we are all concerned about school safety, especially in light of the recent events in Florida. Our county has been examining all of our safety protocols and we will also be reviewing our procedures with staff and students over the next couple of weeks. You can help us by abiding by our safety procedures as you check into the school. As a reminder, all visitors must come to the office upon arrival at school and sign in. All visitors must have a picture ID, so please do not expect special treatment if you do not bring your license or picture ID. When you sign in, you may go only to the place you have signed in to visit. It is not okay to wander the building, hang out in a pod area, or try to visit a classroom if the teacher is not expecting you. Also as a reminder, do not hold the door open for anyone else and make sure the door is secure after you enter the building. We do have cameras at the door and check the video of those desiring to enter the building before allowing them to come in. Thank you for your help in keeping our school and your children safe.

The Positivity Project will focus on the character strength of social intelligence next week. Social intelligence refers to a person’s ability to understand and manage relationships with others. It is distinct from a person’s IQ or “book smarts.” It includes an individual’s ability to understand, and act on, the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors of other people. Our social intelligence is increased when we understand our character strengths and look to understand the character strengths in others. Our teachers will be sharing information and activities on this character strength over the next two weeks.

The weather has certainly been crazy this last week or so with temperatures fluctuating 20 - 30 degrees and as high as the low 80s.  This means our children are itching to get into shorts or shed their jackets. A couple of reminders: make sure your child's name is in all jackets and/or sweatshirts, have your child check our overflowing Lost and Found for misplaced and forgotten items, and be sure to check your child's shorts before they leave the house. Shorts that fit in the summer may be too tight or too short now because your children are really growing.

If you or your organization would like to participate in Union Mill’s 2nd semester community flyer distribution, mark March 16, on your calendar. Non-profit organizations are welcome to participate. All flyers need to be approved before they are distributed. One flyer must be submitted to the Union Mill office by Friday, March 2. After approval, copies will need to be made for distribution on March 16. Please call the office at 703-322-8500 for additional information.
