Woodson Weekly - February 23rd
|
Vision Statement We are a school community where all students have purpose and value!
*See something, hear something, please say something*
Woodson Minds Matter Club sponsored free yoga for students during return periods on Tuesday, February 20th. Students got a chance to take a break from their day and complete a yoga practice.
A Message from Dr. Floyd
I want to
take a moment to thank our families, students and staff for bringing forth
ideas and demonstrating concern for our Woodson community over the last
week. Our lives have been changed forever as a result of the various
tragedies in our world.
Our number one goal at Woodson HS is to provide a
safe and positive learning environment for all students. We appreciate
everyone’s help in talking with our students about the events and helping them
turn emotions into appropriate action.
Should you or your student need any
further assistance there are numerous resources available and are listed
below. In addition here are some useful articles and blogs to use in such
situations:

Woodson Pyramid Attendance Support Information
Academic success relies upon excellent school attendance. Students who come to school on time every day are
building critical life skills they will use the rest of their lives. Like strengthening a muscle, building
positive attendance habits early on makes a difference for our students today
and for our adults of tomorrow.
Attending school regularly helps students feel better about school and
themselves.
To learn more about attendance support at Woodson and information about how to view your child's attendance in the Student Information System (SIS), please review this letter from Dr. Floyd.

School Health Services Survey
The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).
To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians and school staff members who interact with the school health rooms. The survey has been approved for distribution by the FCPS’ Internal Survey Advisory Committee.
The survey will take less than five minutes to complete and will provide the FCHD with valuable information. Your participation in this important endeavor is appreciated.

Congratulations to the 27
students who were inducted into the inaugural Computer Science Honor Society on
Wednesday, February 21st. This was the Honor Society’s inaugural induction
ceremony.
The newly formed society will engage in Computer Science tutoring,
promoting Computer Science, and community outreach.
2018-2019 Course Registration
We are currently meeting with students to
schedule for the 2018-2019 school year. If you have questions or
concerns about your student’s course selections, please contact your child’s
counselor. Opportunities for course changes will be limited next year. The deadline for changes to next year's course selections is Thursday, May 31st.
The
third quarter of the academic year is always interesting. Some
students get fatigued with the routines of school, classwork, and
homework. If your child did poorly in the first semester and you
are concerned whether or not he/she can still pass a course for the year,
communicate with your child's teacher.
March English Writing SOLs
The Virginia Department of Education
(VDOE) requires that all students in grade 11 take the English
Writing Standards of Learning (SOL) Test. The purpose of testing is to
provide information about student achievement in several areas of English:
Writing.
Scores from the test will be used to determine whether students fail
to meet standards, are proficient in meeting the standards, or are advanced in
the standards. The test has two components: multiple choice and direct writing.
In order to obtain a score your child must complete both components.
The
English Writing test will be administered at W.T. Woodson from March 5th
through 8th.
It will be very helpful if you can avoid appointments
which may take your child out of school during this time period. Also, it will
help your child perform his or her best if he or she has had a good night’s
rest, a healthy breakfast, and comes to school with a positive attitude.
If you have any questions, please contact Kathleen Guinee, the Assessment Coach
(kpguinee@fcps.edu) or your child’s school counselor.
Congratulations to Woodson's Deaf and Hard of Hearing Academic Bowl team! They won their first match against Kentucky School for the Deaf, their second match against Bidville HS in TX, and their third match against the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind today.
U.S. Service Academy and ROTC Night
Save the date for the U.S. Service Academy and ROTC Night on Tuesday, February 27th at 7:00pm in the Fairfax High School Auditorium.
If you want to be an officer
in the United States Armed Forces, you will want to attend our U.S. Service
Academy and ROTC Night. Representatives from each service academy and
branch of ROTC as well as a representative from Gerry Connolly's office will
present information you need and want to know.
This is especially
important for Juniors because the application process begins the Junior
year. W.T. Woodson shares hosting this event with Fairfax, Madison, and Oakton
High Schools.
Junior Parent Night
Junior Parent Night will be Thursday,
March 1st at 7:00pm in the WTW Auditorium (Snow Date 7 March).
Be prepared and learn what you and your students need to know.
Junior Parent Night
provides Junior parents with the details they need to move forward with the
post-secondary education search. Learn about tricks to searching in
Family Connection and important basics to paying for college relevant to the
search. You can discover important information most parents don’t know.
This event has a parent focus. Juniors will learn in a seminar held the
previous day but are welcome to come if they wish.
NVCC Annandale Campus Field Trip
Woodson's Student Services Department is sponsoring a field trip to visit Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) Annandale campus on Thursday, March 8th from 10:00am-1:00pm.
This is a wonderful opportunity to tour the NVCC's campus, meet with administration counselors, learn about financial aid, career services, placement assessments, application procedures, and transfer planning to four-year colleges.
Please see your school counselor to sign up for this field trip and to get a permission form.
Fairfax County Teen Job Fair and Resume Building Workshop
Mark your calendars for the upcoming Fairfax County Teen Job Fair and Resume Building Workshop on Saturday, March 10th from 1-3pm at Woodson.
This event is co-sponsored
by Supervisor Linda Smyth, Supervisor John Cook, Central Fairfax Chamber of
Commerce, and Woodson High School.
Opportunity to Apply for Student Representative to the School Board
Each
year, in accordance with FCPS Policy

representative to the School Board.
The student representative is not a member
of the School Board but serves in a nonvoting, advisory capacity, representing
the interests of the students of Fairfax County Public Schools. Students who are currently in grades 9, 10, and 11 are eligible
to apply, and they do not need to be current members of the Superintendent’s
Student Advisory Council (SAC).
