Upcoming Launch of New CRS Website

Dear Churchill Road Community,

On Tuesday, February 27, we will launch a newly designed website, which will offer several advantages, including:

  • Displaying on mobile devices, an important feature because so many of you are coming to the site through cell phones,
  • Enabling the easy sharing of content between school and Fairfax County Public Schools (for example, emergency alerts about weather closures etc. from the main site will be promptly displayed on the school site),
  • Translating site pages into 75 different languages,
  • Making navigation of sites easier for parents as children progress through the FCPS schools because all sites will feature similar menus, and
  • Featuring accessibility to all users with disabilities (508 compliant).

This new site has been designed by FCPS to provide our community with a consistent online format.  Schools throughout FCPS will have the same website design by the end of the school year.

If you are not able to find the information you need on our home page, you can use any of the following:

  • Search Function, similar to the way you would look for information on Google,
  • Top Menu, which links to main topics including About, Academics, Activities, Resources, and Contact Us, and
  • Full Menu, in the upper left hand corner of the home page, which shows all the items under the main topics.

If you have bookmarked our current website, be sure to update that with our new website address, which will be sent via a News You Choose communication on Monday, February 26.

While FCPS has tried to include all of the information that you come to rely on, there may be something that we have forgotten. If that is the case, feel free to contact Jordan Craig Kuhn (JLCraigKuhn@fcps.edu) or Kim Moran (KMoran2@fcps.edu).

Sincerely,
Don Hutzel, Principal
Churchill Road Elementary School

Jump Rope for Heart is Back!!!

jumprope
Ms. Gift and Mr. Varhol get ready for Jump Rope for Heart with some third grade students!

It’s time for Jump Rope for Heart here at Churchill Road starting next Monday, February 26th!  Using rope jumping as a medium for rigorous exercise, body coordination, skill development and community service, CRS has again partnered with the American Heart Association in an effort to educate students about the cardiovascular system while providing information on keeping this essential body system healthy throughout life.  CRS students in grades K-6 will be participating in lessons that include jump rope skills over the next few weeks.

This will be the 19th year of participation at Churchill Road!  We have set a goal of $13,000 after raising over $19,995 last year. Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser forms will go out to the entire student body in this week’s (February 21) VIP folder.  Students who choose to participate in the fundraiser will have the opportunity to earn Thank You gifts from the American Heart Association while helping millions across the United States through the American Heart Association.  We are going 100% online donations this year.  Easy to follow steps have been sent home in VIP folders.  The fundraiser will officially begin on Monday February 26th and end on Friday March 23rd, 2018.

Click the link below to sign up now!  Search “Churchill Road.” Thank you for your participation in this great event!

Wellness:  Making Every Day Special

val
Sixth graders' intention for Valentine's Day was to make cards for residents of a local senior center.

In the last week you may have celebrated Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year, and President’s Day. Holidays tend to bring a sense of joy just by being a break from the normal routine, but there are many ways we can easily make any day feel special. One option is to begin your day by setting a simple positive intention. An intention provides a map for your day and can be a word—gratitude, energy, patience—or a short statement: “I intend to successfully complete my project.” An intention is a seed for the day and it is amazing how setting an intention can frame the experience of your day and increase your awareness of opportunities for you to move in the direction you desire. In addition to setting an intention, other possibilities for making an ordinary day special is by deciding to serve breakfast fare for dinner or dining by candlelight. You can try a different route for your commute, read a book from a genre you do not usually choose, or have a dance party in your living room. You can always check the internet for a list of holidays to celebrate; tomorrow is George Washington’s birthday, World Thinking Day, and Be Humble Today. The Girl Scouts started World Thinking Day in 1926 and the founder of Be Humble Day is so modest we do not know who started it. You and your family can make this Friday special by getting silly for Wacky Tacky Spirit Day and joining us at the playground (or gym if there is inclement weather) at 8:00 a.m. for Family Fitness Churchill Spirit Day.  Enjoy finding fun and exciting ways to make today feel special!

Celebrating the 100th Day of School

Kindergarteners celebrated the 100th day of school by dressing up as 100 year-olds and making commemorative crowns (above) while first graders made patterned necklaces of Froot Loops with a little help from their sixth grade buddies (below).

As outlined by FCPS Regulation 1367.2, school principals shall offer options to nonprofit organizations that want to make their materials available to students and parents. At Churchill Road, non-profit organizations will be permitted to send home flyers in the take home folder 4 times during the year. The dates for the 2017-2018 school year are the weeks of October 2, December 4, March 5 and May 14. These fliers must be related to the school’s educational mission and be age-appropriate. Community organizations must submit their materials in advance to the school’s principal and must include the disclaimer “These materials are neither sponsored nor endorsed by the Fairfax County School Board, the Superintendent, or this School.” Once approved, the organization will be required to make the copies necessary for distribution. Any questions can be directed to Kim Moran, Churchill Road's Public Relations Liaison.
