Rocky Run MS News and Updates: 2/16/18

Principal's Note

Dear Rocky Run Families:

There are so many good things happening at Rocky Run!  All week we have been focused on the P2 character strength of LOVE and sharing our appreciation for the positive impact students and staff are making each and every day.  Check out this video created by our students to share the LOVE  with our teachers.

It was my pleasure to recognize the Raise the Ram students of the month for January this week as well as celebrate the accomplishments of many of our after school clubs who have achieved great success in their respective competitions.  Congratulations to our Science Olympiad, Math Counts and Debate teams for representing Rocky Run so well!

I am adding an additional section to our weekly emails for renovation information. I will continue to share updated information as I receive it.

I welcome your feedback, questions, concerns.  Please feel free to reach out to me at any time.  I hope to see you at Rocky Run MS very soon.

Sincerely,

Amy Goodloe, Ed.D.

Virginia SOL - Grade 8 Writing Dates:

8th Grade students will be taking the VA SOL for Grade 8 Writing Test on March 13 and 15 (snow dates March 14 and 15).  It is important your child attend school on these days.  If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time period.

Renovation News:

Plans for the full building renovation of RRMS continue to move forward.  We are expecting to receive the official notice for work to begin very soon.  School administrators are in close communication and collaboration with FCPS Design and Construction representatives including a construction coordinator who is on site at RRMS full time.  His role is to work to ensure the safety of our students and staff throughout the construction project.

During construction, questions about indoor air quality will arise.  Visit the Rocky Run website to review FAQs related to indoor air quality.

If you have specific questions about the renovation, please email them to Administrative Assistant, AJ Ries, ajries@fcps.edu.

Student Services Updates:

Mark your calendars:  Rocky Run Middle School, in cooperation with the Rocky Run PTA will present an information program for parents on the impact Social Media use is having on pre-teen and teen age children.  Included in this program will be:

  • Information from a therapist on the impact of social media on the developing brain of adolescents, and how parents can help their teens navigate this confusing on-line world.
  •  Information from a technology specialist on the most common apps young people are using, and how parents can place parent controls on social media.

This program will be offered at Rocky Run on April 26 at 7:00.

Academic Advising for next school year:  All students at Rocky Run have chosen their classes for next year.  Rising 9th grade course sheets have been sent to the high schools, and we are currently receiving the course sheets from our incoming 7th graders. As we enter the classes into the computer, parents will be able to see their child’s courses on Parent Vue.  We expect to have all courses entered by the end of February.

  • If you see an error or a course you wish to change for a rising 9th grader, please contact your student's respective high school to make changes.
  • Parents of rising 8th graders may contact your child’s counselor.
  • Parents of rising 7th graders may contact Donna Piscitelli, Interim Director of Student Services at djpiscitelli@fcps.edu

Any changes to courses for next year must be requested in writing (email) prior to June 30, 2018

PreArranged Absences:  As spring approaches, we would like parents to be aware of changes to FCPS attendance policy related to prearranged absences:

  • Parents are encouraged to minimize absences during school hours, and to plan family trips and vacations during school holidays.
  • Requests for prearranged absences for longer than one school day, must be submitted to the principal within a reasonable time for the school to review.
  • Due to varied demands on teachers for make-up work, teachers shall have discretion to decide the type and amount of work and when students shall make up work for preapproved absences.
  • Teachers shall not be required to provide assignments in advance of the absences, but may do so at their discretion.
  • Parents and students are encouraged to work with teachers prior to the absence to develop a plan for making up missed work, including expected deadlines.
  • Parents and students are expected to access assignments and class materials through FCPS 24/7, and to stay current with assignments while out of school.
