Make Advice Easier to Take With Three Pluses and a Wish Strategy |
Occasionally parents need to give teens
advice, but advice is sometimes hard for teens to take. They have a way of
tuning out much of what is said to them.
For example; You may wish your teen would focus
on studying the way they do on sports.
Before you give your teen advice,
try the "three pluses and a wish" formula. Find three good things to
say:
- "I appreciate how hard you’re working on your soccer game."
- "Your goal in the last game shows that you have really improved."
- "It’s clear
that other players on your team look to you as a leader."
After stating
three pluses, convey your wish or advice.
- “I wish you could bring the same commitment
and work ethic that you have in soccer to the work
you do for school.”
Framing your
advice this way helps your child realize that you appreciate them.
