Puppy
love in Pre-K
|
|
 |
|
On
Friday, February 9th, volunteers from PALS Animal therapy dogs
visited our Pre-K classrooms. As you can imagine, students showered the furry
visitors with lots of love and attention. They also read stories to the classroom
visitors. We hope to have this organization return again to visit other grade
levels. Special thanks to Pre-K teacher Noelle Naughton for arranging this
special experience.

Fine Dining at Fort
Belvoir Primary
Congratulations to the following classes as they have earned Fine
Dining during their regular scheduled lunchtime! The students are excited to
eat on the cafeteria stage and family members are welcome to join. Please note
that this is an ongoing behavior incentive for the cafeteria as once a class
has earned 50 points, they start earning points towards their next Fine Dining!

Project-Based Learning
(PBL)
|
 |
|
Project-Based Learning (PBL) is the act of learning through
identifying a real-world problem and developing its solution. Kids show what
they learn as they journey through the unit, not just at the end. In January,
students completed a Bridges unit in which they took on the role of civil
engineers. Since then, students have been working on trying to find ways
to filter dirty water and make it safe for people to drink. As part of
their lessons in the PBL Lab, students have also focused on the Engineering
Design Process, the Nature of Change, the Rules of Brainstorming, technology,
collaboration and cooperation with peers, and how to engage in observation and
inquiry.

Future Dolphin Engineers
The week of February 18-24 is National Engineers Week. The
National Building Museum (in Washington, DC) is holding a special free kickoff
event for families on Saturday, February 17, from 10am-4:30pm. Engineering
Family Day is designed for children ages 4-12, and numerous professional
engineers of all types will be on hand to share their love of the design and
build process with the kids! The website for the event is: http://www.engineeringfamilyday.org/.
FLU Activity
For the past nine weeks, the Virginia Department of Health has
reported widespread flu activity and Fairfax County continues to see high levels
of influenza activity in our community. Fairfax County Health Department works
very closely with FCPS to monitor and respond to increases in influenza
activity. The Health Department recommends everyone 6 months of age and older
get vaccinated against influenza, stay home from school and work when sick, use
your sleeve to cover coughs and sneezes, and wash your hands thoroughly after
using the bathroom and before preparing/eating food.
How to Get Through Flu Season? Do the Bump! Do the bump! Our Health
Department encourages you to bump elbows instead of shaking hands, among other
ways to avoid germs.

Mystery Staff member
We have such an amazing staff here at Fort Belvoir Primary! We
wanted to take a moment to help you learn a little more about each of them.
Each week, we will provide some clues regarding our “Mystery Staff member” and
the following week will reveal the name.
******
This week's staff member grew up in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania and loves reading,
listening to music, and going to the beach. She loves amusement parks and
traveling in the summer. One of her favorite things to do is going home
to see her new nephew Rhys. She was just married this past summer and is
enjoying married life! Can you guess who this is?

Last week’s Mystery Staff Member was
Taj Coleman (Grade 3 Teacher)! |
