Cougar Robotics Claws To The
Semi-Finals!
Both of the Cougar Robotics teams made
it to the Semi-Finals in the Central Virginia Qualifier for the First Tech
Challenge Saturday. They battled it out against 50 other high school teams.
Team 369, led by Captain Mrinaal Lorgengo, was a finalist for the Control
Award, which celebrates a Team that uses sensors and software to increase the Robot’s
functionality on the field. Team 226, led by Captain Quintin Harter, was a
finalist for the The Inspire Award, which celebrates a role model FIRST Team,
an inspiration to other Teams, acting with Gracious Professionalism® both on
and off the Playing Field and in their community. Great job Cougar Robotics.
And congratulations to team 369 that will be competing in the State
Championship in Richmond in 2 weeks.

Are you interested in government? Are you looking for leadership opportunities?
Consider applying for a slot to participate in the American Legion Auxiliary

All applications must be submitted to Ms. Sherrill by Thursday, March 1st 2018.
AVID 2018-19 Applications
Applications are currently being
accepted for the 2018-2019 AVID elective course.
The Oakton AVID program is a unique program for 9th– 12th grade students. It is
a program that truly will help students “Advance Via Individual Determination.”
AVID at Oakton is designed to help students get the most out of their abilities
and develop skills that translate directly into success in high school,
college/university, and 21st Century jobs. The skills include: organization,
public speaking, critical reading/writing, and creative problem solving.
AVID at Oakton intends to foster leaders in the classroom and in the community.
Our goals are that each AVID student graduate high school with an Advanced
Academic Diploma and receives acceptance into a four-year college or
university. Oakton AVID students are known as students that push themselves in
the classroom, work diligently towards their goals, and motivate others by
being an example of scholarship.
Students interested in this course next year should complete this application
and return to Ms. Byrd in Room 268 or their counselor by February 16. Questions
can be directed to Katy Byrd at kkbyrd@fcps.edu.
Latin club Updates
Salvete omnes! The February Latin Club
meeting is Wednesday the 14th after school. It will be followed by Latin
tutoring. All students are invited. On Wednesday the 21st after school LC will
be hosting a movie night! There will be snacks and refreshments as we watch the
1958 version of Hercules starring Steve Reeves. Both events are in room 251.
Chemistry Olympiad – Test March 7
The Washington Area Local Section of
the American Chemical Society (ACS) is now seeking students interested in the
2018 United States National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO). The Society will use
the 2018 USNCO Local Section Examination to select those students who will go
on to the USNCO National Examination in April. According to USNCO rules, only
20 students per school are allowed to take the exam. For that reason, the exam will
be given only to students who have taken AP Chemistry or are currently enrolled
in AP Chemistry.
The Local Section Exam is a timed multiple-choice exam of 60 questions in 110
minutes. Students must be younger than 20 years old on July 1st.
The Exam will be held in Room 119 on Wednesday, March 7, at 3:00pm.
Students can sign up for the exam using the Google Form at this link: Sign Up Here. The first 20
students to sign up, will be selected to take the exam.
Contact Susan Bingham (sdbingham@fcps.edu)
if you have any questions.
