Woodson Weekly - February 16th

Vision Statement We are a school community where all students have purpose and value!
Vaping - What you need to know!
Woodson HS is hosting a presentation to help our community stay informed about the current vaping trends this Wednesday, February 21st at 7:00pm in the Woodson Auditorium (entrance 18). Vaping
is the act of inhaling vapor produced by a vaporizer or electronic cigarette.
The vapor is produced from a material such as an e-liquid, concentrate, or dry
herb.
This presentation is open to parents, faculty and staff for the entire Woodson Pyramid.
Brian Maslowski, Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drug instructor from the FCPS Office of Student Safety and Wellness will be presenting the latest trends in vaping, e-cigarettes, and juuls. Mr. Maslowski will have samples of these devices and will discuss the chemicals that adolescents use.
It has come to our attention that some students
and parents seem to perceive vaping as a relatively innocuous activity that is
less harmful than other tobacco products. The reality is that there is a
growing body of evidence that vaping can harm people, especially adolescents.
Loyal Heart
Loyal Heart is a student-written and produced musical which opens tonight, Friday, February 16th at 7pm and runs through Saturday, February 17th at 1pm in the Woodson Auditorium. The performances are free and open to the public. Tickets are available at https://loyalheartthemusical.eventbrite.com.
Senior Paul Hardin makes history jump out of the history books and onto the stage with an all new musical Loyal Heart about young King Henry VIII. To tell this tale, Paul composed 24 original songs, fully orchestrated for a 16 piece pit orchestra. Change surrounds young King Henry VIII as he grapples with a destiny he did not expect. The musical asks the question: Who is the Loyal Heart?
Fifty busy students have joined Paul to volunteer their time to make Loyal Heart come to life. As a completely student-led production with the support of Woodson’s Tri-M musical honor society, Loyal Heart gives participating students a chance to have leadership roles in music direction, set design and choreography. Loyal Heart offers the complete cast and crew the unique opportunity to create a new musical while in high school.
The Blank Theater in Los Angeles selected Loyal Heart as a semi-finalist in their Young Playwrights Festival 2017.
For more information, please contact Pam Hardin at (703)425-7896 or pamhardin@verizon.net.

2nd Quarter Report Cards
Did you receive your child's report card? Second quarter report cards were distributed last Friday, February 9th through 8th period.
If you didn't get your child's report card, please have your child pick it up from their 8th period teacher.
2018-2019 Course Registration
We are currently meeting with students to
schedule for the 2018-2019 school year. If you have questions or
concerns about your student’s course selections, please contact your child’s
counselor. Opportunities for course changes will be limited next year. The deadline for changes to next year's course selections is Thursday, May 31st.
The
third quarter of the academic year is always interesting. Some
students get fatigued with the routines of school, classwork, and
homework. If your child did poorly in the first semester and you
are concerned whether or not he/she can still pass a course for the year,
communicate with your child's teacher.
March English Writing SOLs
The Virginia Department of Education
(VDOE) requires that all students in grade 11 take the English
Writing Standards of Learning (SOL) Test. The purpose of testing is to
provide information about student achievement in several areas of English:
Writing.
Scores from the test will be used to determine whether students fail
to meet standards, are proficient in meeting the standards, or are advanced in
the standards. The test has two components: multiple choice and direct writing.
In order to obtain a score your child must complete both components.
The
English Writing test will be administered at W.T. Woodson from March 5th
through 8th.
It will be very helpful if you can avoid appointments
which may take your child out of school during this time period. Also, it will
help your child perform his or her best if he or she has had a good night’s
rest, a healthy breakfast, and comes to school with a positive attitude.
If you have any questions, please contact Kathleen Guinee, the Assessment Coach
(kpguinee@fcps.edu) or your child’s school counselor.
Captain Reginald Davis, honorary Tuskegee Airman, shares his story with students in honor of Black History Month on Tuesday, February 13th.
Advanced Placement Accommodations
All requests for College Board AP testing accommodations must be submitted by Friday, February 20th. Please contact Ms. Bensalem at NBensalem@fcps.edu, for more information.
