In
observance of George Washington's Birthday - Presidents' Day, Fairfax County
public schools and offices will be closed on Monday, February 19th. |
Doors open at 6:00, events begin at 6:30. Admission is $3 per person; all admissions benefit the PTA. (Please try to bring cash, and exact change if possible.) The Centreville HS boosters will be selling concessions to raise funds for their efforts. There will also be Willow Springs Spirit Wear for sale.
Dear
Families,
We hope
to see you at Spirit Night tonight as our staff battles each other in our
annual staff basketball game. Please bring the whole family to cheer on their
favorite teachers and staff! This is also a great time to see performances by the awesome Fox Ropers, Fox Ensemble, and Zumba Club.
We have
had such a fun day today. Our 4th graders celebrated all that
they have learned in social studies with Colonial Day. They engaged in
many stations that had activities relating to the country as it was almost 300
years ago. In addition to this fun, everyone at WSES celebrated the 100th
day of school! Activities focused with groupings of 100 and different
ways to apply mathematical concepts were found throughout our school.
However, nobody celebrated more adorably than our kindergartners as they
dressed up as 100-year-olds and paraded their way throughout the school.
On Valentine’s Day, our 3rd grade team held their annual Manners
Day. They rotated through stations to learn etiquette and politeness in a
variety of settings.
There is
even more to celebrate, from kindergartners using technology to record
themselves reading and retelling stories, to a virtual community being started
in a second grade classroom, to students creating commercials using the green
screen to demonstrate their learning. Be sure to follow us on Twitter to
see all of the great things taking place here every day.
Wednesday
morning, we will be holding our Bus Driver Appreciation Breakfast. Did
you know that Willow Springs has the largest bus fleet of all elementary
schools in Fairfax County Public Schools? Thank you to Robert Walter and
the PTA for coordinating this awesome event to show our support for those who
get our kids here safely each and every day.
Have a
wonderful Presidents' Day! See you Tuesday – and hopefully tonight!

5th Grade Fun!
5th Graders from Ms. Stough's classroom used their critical and creative thinking skills this week as they participated in this Valentine-themed STEAM activity. Students demonstrated problem solving strategies and collaborated to successfully construct a barge that would hold the most hearts using only aluminum foil!

Testing Information for Parents/Guardians
New public FCPS Student Assessment webpages are now available for parents/guardians to access basic information about their
children’s required assessments. In compliance with Every Student
Succeeds Act (ESSA) testing transparency, these webpages give an overview
of:
-
Right
to refuse participation in state testing (e.g., SOLs)
-
Required
assessments at each grade level
-
Resources
for accessing and understanding assessment results
The Grade Level Tests webpage
may be especially helpful for parents/guardians about required assessments. For each grade level,
parents/guardians will find a chart that summarizes the source of the testing
requirement, the purpose of the test, amount of time needed to complete
testing, time frame for testing within the year, and how and when results will
be distributed. For further information or questions, please contact a member of our administrative team.
Volunteer Opportunity
Volunteers needed on March 19th, 20th , and/or 21st
to assist WSES art teachers with mounting art work and affixing
labels on work in preparation for the Pyramid Art Show. If interested
please contact Mrs. Heslep or Mrs.
Holland at mheslep@fcps.edu or mkholland@fcps.edu.
