FSES third graders have been working on
several science experiments since returning to school in the new year. Currently, they are
investigating soil and its components. The students are acting as pedologists
to discover the physical properties of the components of soil and
observing what happens in different situations. Their most recent experiment
involved investigating the physical properties of clay and determining whether
or not the characteristics change after breaking the clay apart.
For the next two weeks, Franklin Sherman students will be focusing on the character trait of love. Students in all classrooms, from kindergarten
through sixth grade, will have the opportunity to discuss this trait. They will
talk about times that they have felt loved and ways that they can show love.
They will also refer to familiar books, quotes, and video clips to find
examples of love. It is our hope that you will bring this focus into your home
as well. Ask your children about this trait, or even point out times that you
have recognized this trait in them. By recognizing and appreciating one
another’s strengths, students will continue fostering the “Other People Matter”
mindset.
We have a new addition to our Franklin Sherman family!
Last Friday, we received two baby chicks and 7 fertile eggs from Rent a Coop. The eggs are being kept warm in an incubator where they will develop over the next 21 days until new baby chicks peck out of the shells and join the others in the cage. The chicks will then be sent back to Rent a Coop where they will be placed into the program
to lay more eggs. FSES second graders will be caring for the chicks while watching them grow. What a great way for our second grade students to continue learning about life cycles!

Dear
Franklin Sherman Families,
A
handful of students from a local school are in need of resources due to a fire
that recently happened in their community. As a school, we would like to
be able to help these students. If your family is interested in providing
a monetary donation, new or gently used books, or a gift card to Target,
Walmart or a grocery store, you can drop the donation off at the FSES office or
send it to school with your child. Please make sure all donations
are in a sealed envelope addressed to the school counselor,Jill Scharl.
Donations are being accepted until Friday, February 16. We are very
grateful for your support.
Thank
you,
Jill

sampled.
Host a table!! The magic of International Night is created by
the wonderful families who share their favorite family dishes, culinary

Fairfax County Public Schools has a well established
policy and protocol for responding to threats of violence in schools. To
help parents and older students learn more about the role they can play in
keeping schools safe, FCPS has collaborated with the Youth Violence Project of
the Curry School of Education, University of Virginia, to develop short videos
with useful information. These brief modules were developed for parents
and children age 12 years of age and older. You may want to watch the student video with your
child to answer any questions which may arise. To access these modules, go to www.schoolthreatassessment.com, and use parent
code pgvsdt and student code sy8zk2
as a password.
