 Dear CES Families,
This was a great week here at CES! We almost had our first full week of school since the holiday break, but Father Winter had a different plan. Hopefully, next week will consist of 5 full school days. Despite the interruptions our students are pressing forward with their studies. They continue to work on our school goal of collaboration. Collaboration is the action of working with someone to produce or create something. This is a very important skill and is one of the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate attributes. Below are the characteristics associated with collaboration that we are specifically addressing.
- Respects divergent thinking to engage others in thoughtful discussion.
- Demonstrates the ability to work interdependently within a group to promote learning, increase productivity, and achieve common goals.
- Analyzes and constructs arguments and positions to ensure examination of a full range of viewpoints.
- Seeks and uses feedback from others to adapt ideas and persist in accomplishing difficult tasks.
Please ask your child how they have collaborated with a peer at school recently. We have included a variety of pictures this week of students collaborating on tasks during this past week.

This week we learned about the character
strength of FAIRNESS! Fairness is the product of moral
judgment – the process by which people determine what is morally right and what
is morally wrong. Moral reasoning has been explored and analyzed in two main traditions:
the justice reasoning approach and the care reasoning approach.
Justice reasoning emphasizes the use of reason and logic. In
justice reasoning, fairness is determined by objectively weighing what is right
or wrong, as determined by a group, society, or universal ethical principles.
Care reasoning, by contrast, emphasizes care and compassion. This approach uses
concepts like empathy – and understanding and accounting for the needs,
interests, and well-being of another person – when making moral decisions.
Although the two approaches are different, most people use
a blend of justice and care reasoning when making choices related to fairness.
CES Soaring Eagles
Please share your thoughts with the staff! CES Soaring Eagles are compliments, kudos, etc. that we will share with the staff. What a great way to show your appreciation and to help make the CES Staff's week positive! Please click HERE to share your CES Soaring Eagles! Below are some examples.
- 6th grade staff for your efforts and willingness to spend Wednesday-Friday sleep away field trip to Camp Highroads with the entire 6th grade! I know each teacher had to make arrangements for their families in your absence. My child had an outstanding experience with treasured memories. Thank you!
- Sally Shirley--A big shout out to Mrs. Shirley for being so sweet and understanding to all of the children who come in with boo-boo's, aches and pains. We are so happy to have you at our school.
