Weekly Newsletter for Feb. 9, 2018

We were hopeful that this would be a full week of school, but Mother Nature had other ideas. Because we are such a big county, it is sometimes hard to understand why schools are delayed or closed when it looks fine in our area. Remember that student safety is always the main consideration when making weather decisions. Click here to get more information on how these decisions are made.

Jump Rope for Heart is back!!  The event will be held on Wednesday, February 21, from 6- 7:30pm. Sign in starts at 5:30pm. Jump Rope for Heart is open to all Union Mill families. Participants will travel from station to station doing different activities like rock climbing, Pin the Heart on Bart, bean bag toss, and of course, jumping rope. If you would like to collect online donations for the American Heart Association, please visit their website at www.heart.org/jump.  Donations will also be accepted at the door.  Fundraising is not required to participate in the Jump Rope for Heart event. Small incentives are available to students who collect donations but large prizes will be donated to a school with greater needs than Union Mill.

This week The Positivity Project focused on the character strength of fairness. Fairness combines both the head and the heart; the head focuses on justice  and the heart focuses on caring. The two approaches are different, but they are important to keep in mind as we think and learn about fairness and what it means to be fair. People that are strong in fairness believe that all people have value and treat everyone with respect.  Next week we will focus on the character trait of love. People that exhibit this trait value close relationships with others.

National School Counseling Week
This is the week we celebrate our school counselors and let them know how much we appreciate the impact they have on our students, staff, and school. If you missed the opportunity to thank our counselors this week, please think about sending in a note to them next week.

Crossing Guard/Bus Driver/Custodian/Cafeteria Staff Appreciation Day
Crossing Guard Appreciation Day is the same day as Valentine’s Day this year. At Union Mill, we like to combine this day to show our appreciation to our bus drivers, cafeteria, and custodial staff as well. This is a great time to say thanks to all of these special people that help our kids every day. There will be a collection box in the office for the cafeteria and custodial staff, and students can give notes or small gifts directly to their bus driver and/or crossing guard. The PTA will provide small gifts and goodies for all of those being recognized on that day. If you’d like to help prepare the gifts, please contact Pam Martin: pamgram74@aol.com.

For the past nine weeks, the Virginia Department of Health has reported widespread flu activity and Fairfax County continues to see high levels of influenza activity in our community. Fairfax County Health Department works very closely with FCPS to monitor and respond to increases in influenza activity in our school, working with them to track absences and encourage healthy behaviors to prevent the spread of disease. The Health Department recommends everyone 6 months of age and older get vaccinated against influenza, stay home from school and work when sick, use your sleeve to cover coughs and sneezes, and wash your hands thoroughly after using the bathroom and before preparing/eating food.  Flu vaccine is available through the Health Department and many other locations in the community. Use the Flu Vaccine Finder to locate a provider near you.
