These 3rd graders are taking on the role of engineers as they design the Great Wall of China. Learn about activities like this at our Family Science/STEM Night this Friday!
Family Science/STEM Night is THIS FRIDAY!
Join us for a night of creative and critical thinking this Friday, February 9th. We'll have hands-on activities that promote problem solving in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Come explore as a family. Doors will open at 6pm with pupusas & pizza for sale. Our 6th graders will be holding a bake sale. We hope to see you there! As with all of our Mount Eagle family events, students must be accompanied by an adult. There is no drop-off.

Attendance Counts!
We need your child here for learning each day. When they miss school, that learning can't be made up in the same way as if they were at school. Take care to stay healthy with hand washing and enforcing early bedtimes. If your child has a fever over 100 and/or is vomiting, keep them home. Note that 5 or more unexcused absences will result in a referral to the attendance officer. Let us know how we can support excellent attendance.

Promoting Problem Solving & Flexibility in Math
In these next few weeks, we will be doing our mid-winter assessments in seeing how students are progressing as mathematicians. We asses all students K-6 at the beginning, the middle and the end of the year to see what kinds of strategies they are using to solve different types of math story problems. What are we looking for? We want to see that students are using more than one way to solve a problem because that shows they are flexible thinkers. For example, if I had $10,000 and bought something for $9,994, how much money would I have left? I could solve it one way by subtracting 9,994 from 10,000. And I could solve it another way by simply adding up from 9,994 until I got to 10,000. I would count 9,995...9,996...9,997...9,998...9,999...10,000! Both strategies would lead me to having $6 left.
What can you do at home to support your child? First recognize that there are many different ways to approach the same problem. The best way for any of us is the strategy that makes the most sense to us. Your child's strategy may be different from yours. Prompt them to explain how they're solving a story problem. Asking questions such as, "How did you know that?" and "Talk with me about what your thinking was when you solved this." And to promote that flexible thinking, ask your child, "So can you solve that problem in another way?" Your child's teacher is more than happy to share ideas and the types of problems they are working on at their grade level.
A New Role for Ms. Berrios
If you stopped by the office this past week, you might have noticed that Ms. Yoana Berrios is at a new desk. Effective last Monday, she was promoted to Student Information Assistant. She will handle all registration and student records. We have advertised for a new office assistant and hope to hire a new member to our team this month.
