Principal's Second Message: Progress Reports Come Home Tuesday

There are four essential questions we ask ourselves to guide our instruction:

  1. What do we want our students to learn?
  2. How will we know if they learn it?
  3. What will we do if they do not learn it?
  4. What will we do if they already know it?

Question 2 is answered through many forms at FHES.  Some of our most important student data comes from quick, daily informal assessments that teachers review quickly in the moment to determine next steps for instruction.  A popular method is what we call an exit ticket.  An exit ticket is when students respond to a few questions (typically 1-3) immediately after the whole group lesson.  This informs the teacher whether or not students demonstrate understanding of the lesson's objective/standard.  Our reading, writing, and math workshop models provide teachers with opportunities to work with small groups of students who are paired based on this real-time data.  This allows for efficient re-teaching or extension of a skill or concept.  Exit tickets in addition to rubrics, skill progressions, unit assessments, anecdotal notes, and observations are some ways teachers reflect on each student's performance over the course of a quarter to complete progress report ratings.  We have high expectations for our students and with a strong home-school connection, they will continue to achieve and surpass those expectations!

National School Counseling Week!!!

Please help us show appreciation to our school counselors Donna Hill & Velma Campbell!

National School Counseling Week 2018, "School Counselors: Helping Students Reach for the Stars," will be celebrated from February 5-9, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems.  National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.  National School Counseling Week is always celebrated the first full week in February.
