 COLD AND FLU PREVENTION

As the cold and flu season is in full swing, we want to share some prevention tips with you.  The Health Department recommends that you and your family members take the following steps to protect yourselves and others from influenza and other respiratory illnesses:

·         Vaccinate your child and yourself against influenza this year and every year.

·         Consult with your child’s physician

·         Do not send any child experiencing influenza symptoms to school.  If your child is sent home with flu like symptoms, keep your child home and away from others until the child has been symptom free and without fever for at least 24 hours (i.e. he or she should not attend school, school functions, sporting or extracurricular activities, or leave the home except to seek medical care).

·         Monitor your child for signs of illness.  Symptoms of flu include fever plus a cough and/or sore throat.

·         Try to avoid close contact with individuals who have flu symptoms.

·         Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Teach your children to wash their hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds.  Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself. If soap and water are not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also effective.

·         Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and throw soiled tissues in the trash after use.  If tissues are not available, cover coughs and sneezes with your upper sleeve

·         Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.  Germs spread this way.

·         Use hand sanitizers. Use alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel sanitizers when soap and water are not available.

·         Get enough sleep! A good night’s sleep can help you stay healthy by keeping your immune system strong and allowing your body time to repair itself.

·         Manage stress! You are more likely to get sick when your stress levels are high. Practice stress management techniques such as positive thinking, deep breathing or quiet reflection.

·         Do not share! Do not share your eating utensils or drinks with anyone, especially if that person is sick. Always replace your toothbrush after having a cold or flu

If you have questions regarding these recommendations, please contact your physician or the Fairfax County Health Department School Public Health Nurse, Laura Lux at lelux@fcps.edu.

SUMMER 2018 ENRICHMENT INSTITUTES AND CAMPS

SCHOOL SAFETY AND THREAT ASSESSMENT

Fairfax County Public Schools has a well-established policy and protocol for responding to threats of violence in the schools. To help parents and older students learn more about the role they can play in keeping schools safe, we have collaborated with the Youth Violence Project of the Curry School of Education, University of Virginia to develop short videos with useful information. These brief modules were developed for parents and children aged 12 and up, and you may want to watch the student video with your child to answer any questions which may arise. To access these modules go to www.schoolthreatassessment.com and use parent code pgvsdt and student code sy8zk2 as a password.
