Haycock Hello 2-2-18

Haycock Hello

February 2, 2018

Welcome, Nathan Hauda!

Haycock is excited to welcome its newest staff member, Nathan Hauda.  He comes to us from Langley High School and is an enthusiastic, soon-to-be high school graduate with computer training.  His personal goal is to be a special education teacher.  Nathan will be at Haycock Tuesdays and Thursdays in the mornings.  He enjoys helping others, typing (32WPM), teaching others, and being a good friend.  Nathan's interests range from music, sports, cooking, video games, movies, food, to being kind.

While at Haycock, Nathan will be volunteering his time in the library helping with various tasks, assisting teachers in the classroom with technology, and helping students with reading, writing, and math.

Nathan began this past Tuesday and we are thrilled he is here.  He will be with us until June 5.  Join us in welcoming Nathan Hauda to Haycock!

Responding to Threats of Violence

Fairfax County Public Schools has a well-established policy and protocol for responding to threats of violence in the schools. To help parents and older students learn more about the role they can play in keeping schools safe, we have collaborated with the Youth Violence Project of the Curry School of Education, University of Virginia to develop short videos with useful information. These brief modules were developed for parents and children aged 12 and up, and you may want to watch the student video with your child to answer any questions which may arise. To access these modules go to www.schoolthreatassessment.com and use parent code pgvsdt and student code sy8zk2 as a password.

Summer 2018 Enrichment Institutes and Camps

Enrichment institutes and camps focus on specific areas such as fine and performing arts, technology, study skills, science, and world languages.  FCPS and non-FCPS students are welcome.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Camp, Tech Adventure Camp (TAC), Institute for the Arts (IFTA), and the Elementary Institute for the Arts (E-IFTA) classes will be held at Lake Braddock Secondary School.  Programs run between June 25 and July 27, 2018.   Bus transportation is provided from select high schools and middle schools outside of the Lake Braddock pyramid.  Transportation to and from the selected high schools is the responsibility of the parent/guardian or student.

Grade level eligibility for each program refers to the current 2017-18 school year.  Click on central institutes and camps for additional information.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology will host a technology institute for middle school students and a science and engineering institute for high school students.

ACE enrichment classes stimulate students’ curiosity and provide creative learning experiences in the areas of culinary arts, leadership, test preparation, technology, study skills, ESOL, and world language exploration.  ACE also offers a premier driver’s education Behind the Wheel program to prepare students to obtain their driver’s license.  Click on ACE enrichment classes for additional information.

Registration for 2018-2019 School Year

Soon we will be in staffing season.  The number of staff members we are allocated is based upon student enrollment.  If you have a child or know of a family who has a child who will be attending Haycock next school year and who currently does not attend Haycock, please register your child now.

If a child has been accepted into the AAP program from another school and the family has notified the AAP Office of the acceptance, there is no need to notify Haycock.  The AAP Office communicates the list of students who will be attending Haycock from other schools to Haycock.

Click on the link below to fill out the form for rising kindergarteners. If your child is turning 5 on or before September 30, 2018, they are eligible for kindergarten. Partial registration paperwork is accepted.  This form is only requested to be completed if you have a rising kindergartener attending Haycock next school year.

Right now, we want to make sure our school is fully staffed for next school year.  We also want to make sure we are able to have the smallest class sizes possible.  The sooner we know how many students will be attending Haycock next school year, the sooner we can advocate for more staff and then hire more teachers.

You are welcome to use the attached New Student Registration Checklist in order to help you gather the information to register your child at Haycock.

The person who is able to answer all of your registration questions is Rebecca Wright.  She is reached via e-mail at: rlwright@fcps.edu or call the school office at: 703-531-4002
