Glasgow Community Gazette - January 28

Glasgow Community -

When I reflect back on my own middle and high school experience, I think about sitting in a desk listening to my teachers lecture with little opportunity to read, write, think or discuss. Most of the teachers said the same thing and taught the same way for years. In fact, students would pass down notebooks and old tests to younger siblings and friends. (Full disclosure, I turned in the same leaf project in 8th grade as my sister two years later in Mr. Michler’s class). Here is a photo of me in 7th grade.

Each week in the Glasgow Gazette, I highlight the amazing learning opportunities, experiences and growth of our students. Social, emotional and academic growth occurs because students are consistently provided feedback on their strengths and areas for improvement. They are asked to reflect on their learning each and every class. In a similar manner as our students, Glasgow teachers are also provided feedback on their classroom instruction and asked to reflect on their progress. Below are just a two examples of how our teachers reflect on their practice and continue to grow:

My teaching has changed by me being mindful of student collaboration during lessons. Since the walkthroughs, I have become mindful about making sure students share their thinking when they answer a question through various ways such as turn and talks etc.

As a result of modeling thinking, I’m becoming more focused on the thinking I want my students to be doing. I’m less focused on them just “completing their work” and more focused on whether they have the skills necessary to think through problems/questions/tasks.

I am so honored to work with an amazing staff that works collaboratively to meet the needs of each and every one of our students. As the principal, it is extraordinary to watch each teacher improve their pedagogy by embracing feedback, reflect on their teaching, and being willing to grow. I sometimes wish I had the opportunity to have so many teachers as dedicated as the staff at Glasgow Middle School.

Sincerely,
Shawn P. DeRose
Principal
