CES Family Bulletin #19

6th grade

Dear CES Families,

We are almost halfway through the 2017-2018 school year! Next week marks the end of the second quarter grading period. It is amazing to see the growth in our students. This week was packed full of learning opportunities. Our sixth grade spent some time learning about Liberty Middle School and the transition process.

Our 4th graders were treated to an author visit from Newberry Award Winning author, Steve Sheinkin, this week. Although some may know this author as a textbook writer, he left that behind in 2008, and now writes engaging books about various historical events and people. These stories help events and famous historical figures come alive for readers. Thank you to Mrs. Thorne for organizing this special visitor!

Lieutenant Herb Navaraez of the United States Coast Guard donated a United States flag to the patrols from CES this week. This flag flew over the United States Coast Guard Station in Puerto Rico the day after Hurricane Maria hit through mid November, 2017.

We spent time figuring out how technology and math manipulatives can enhance our learning. We dissected Owl Pellets to learn about food chains and what animals are part of an owls' diet. Our student coffee team delivered warm delicious coffee to grateful staff members on Thursday morning. Overall, it was a great week filled with lots of smiles and collaboration!

We have been learning about HOPE/OPTIMISM, which represent a state of hopefulness and confidence about the future (both short and long term). People with this strength are future oriented. They have a positive vision of what the future holds and maintain confidence that they will get there. They keep a positive attitude despite setbacks – and often find ways to convert what seems like an obstacle into a stepping-stone to achieve their goals.

For a profound example of hope and optimism, please watch Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.

CES Soaring Eagles

Please share your thoughts with the staff! CES Soaring Eagles are compliments, kudos, etc. that we will share with the staff. What a great way to show your appreciation and to help make the CES Staff's week positive! Please click HERE to share your CES Soaring Eagles! Below are some examples.

  • Mrs.Smit has been such an amazing advocate and resource for my child. She truly believes in the best of each student. We have been so blessed to have her twice and we are grateful as a family for her role in both our children’s lives. Her hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed! We hope she can feel our support not just today but everyday! She is simply AMAZING!
  • Tracy Keenan--There are not enough words to describe the positive impact Mrs. Keenan has on the CES community. She is responsive, understanding, incredibly connected with her students and a gem of a teacher. We adore her and we feel so fortunate that she is a part of our lives. Thank you, Mrs. Keenan!!

Public Hearing for FY 2019 Proposed Budget to Be Held on January 29

Last week, Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Scott S. Brabrand presented the school system’s Proposed Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 Budget of $2.9 billion to the Fairfax County School Board. The FY 2019 (2018-19 school year) Proposed Budget focuses on employee compensation and includes an additional $53.1 million to move teacher salaries closer to the regional market average.

The proposed budget is the starting point of the budget process, which ends in May with the School Boards adoption of the Approved Budget. The School Board will hold a budget work session on January 22, and a public hearing on the Proposed Budget on January 29, with additional hearings on January 30 and January 31 if needed.
