MODEL UN SUCCESSES

On Saturday, January 13, 2018 Longfellow’s Model United Nations club participated in the thirteenth annual Gar-Field High School Model UN conference in Woodbridge, VA.  Longfellow was one of ten middle schools in attendance.  Longfellow brought 54 delegates to the conference.  Our delegates sought resolution to issues such as the world-wide poaching crisis, the South China Sea conflict along with one committee set in the future focused on the potential of life in space.  In addition to the United Nations committees, there was one centered on the Justice League.  All of our delegates debated with tenacity and worked to reach consensus with other nations.
Because of Longfellow’s hard work, we earned the Outstanding School Award

EXCHANGE PROGRAM WITH FRANCE

Longfellow (World Language Department) is organizing an exchange program with a school in France. Next Spring, from April 20 to May 1st, a group of 23 French students will come to visit us, and then from June 19 to June 29, a group of Longfellow students will go to visit France and Belgium, and stay with a French family. Right now we are looking for families to host the French students and their two teachers. It is a unique experience to welcome a student from another country and show them life in the US. If you are interested in hosting one or two students, click on this link   https://www.alacartetravel.com/viandier-exchange-2018, or contact Ms. Barrau at cbarrau@fcps.edu.
Our trip in June will combine sightseeing in France and Belgium with an immersion in a French family. Our students will have the unique opportunity to stay with host families from the French school and experience everyday life in a French family, and visit many exciting and famous sites in two different countries. Parents are welcome to join their child for all or some of the sightseeing part of the trip. You do not have to speak French to host or to travel to France since the French students and their families speak English. For more information and enrollment, click on this link https://www.alacartetravel.com/longfellow-france-2018 , or contact Ms. Barrau at cbarrau@fcps.edu.
Our first information meeting for both hosting and travelling will be at Longfellow on Wednesday, January 31st at 6:30 pm.

FAIRFAX COUNTY SCHOOL HEALTH PROMOTION

Get Out & Exercise 60 Minutes a Day
Did you know being more physically active can lead to better grades, improved focus and memory, boost your energy, and can even reduce stress? We need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Don’t have time for a full hour? Fit your fitness activities into smaller 10-15 minute bursts that work with your schedule. Be a role model for the students in your life -- increasing your physical activity each day can lead to a happier, healthier you!
Mindfulness Corner
Students
Getting a little nervous before a big test or project is normal, but feeling super stressed and worried over the small things throughout your day can be unhealthy. If you feel overwhelmed, try these simple breathing exercises to help you calm down and relax:
Bunny Breath: Imagine being a bunny that is sniffing the air—breathe 3 quick sniffs through the nose and slowly breathe out one long exhale through the nose.                                             Flower Breath: Imagine smelling a beautiful flower—breathe in slowly through the nose and out slowly through the mouth, letting go of any tension.
Bear Breath: Inhale through the nose, pause; exhale out the nose, pause. Breathe in to a count of 3 or 4, pause for a count of 1 or 2; breathe out for a count of 3 or 4, pause for a count of 1 or 2.
Hissing Breath: Imagine being a snake—breathe in slowly through the nose and breathe out through the mouth with a long and slow hissing sound
Staff
It is natural for us to worry about things in our lives. Hectic schedules, relationship concerns, or uncertainty about the future are just some of the stressors that may impact our workday. The demands of your classroom may add to stress, and can turn into serious anxiety. It is important to nurture your mental health so that you can be present for your students. Try these mindfulness techniques throughout the school day to reduce stress and enhance well-being: practice deep and slow breathing, listen to relaxing music, draw in a notebook, or turn down the lights for a “brain break.” Learn to recognize when stress levels are rising in the classroom and incorporate these methods for a better environment for you and your students.
