WELLNESS WEEK
January 16th through 19th The end of the first semester can be a stressful time for everyone, kids and teachers alike. Wellness Week activities will be ongoing for students during the week of January 16th and we need your help in making sure teachers are able to enjoy this time as well. Please sign up here to donate food to the Student Services Wellness Week teacher snack cart for a day of healthy eating. As you know, healthy snacking has a number of benefits that include: • Reducing stress, improving focus and productivity: Healthy snacks can give anyone a boost of energy. In fact, studies show that what employees eat during the workday has an impact on mental acuity, energy, and overall performance. • Increasing nutrient levels: Studies show that employees who participate in wellness programs at work reported improved physical health and fewer hospital stays because they maintained a more balanced nutritional diet. • Overcoming the afternoon slump: Maintaining energy levels throughout the day by fueling your body right will help to prevent the afternoon slump. • Maintaining your metabolism: This is beneficial for anyone trying to lose a few pounds. All donations will be collected in the LMS main office on Tuesday, January 16th for distribution throughout the school day. Please sign up here
MITTEN COMPETITION
In honor of LMS Student Service’s mini wellness week (Jan 16th – 19th), we want to promote generosity as a way of promoting wellness within our school. Multiple studies, year after year, highlight that generosity benefits both our physical and mental health by reducing stress, enhancing one’s sense of purpose, and increasing resiliency. Many families within our community go without the necessary items that protect their physical well-being. Students are being asked to donate new gloves, mittens, hats, and scarves of various sizes to then be shared with those in our community. Items will be collected by 1st period teachers and those with the most donated items at the end of the week will receive a breakfast party.

MCLEAN HS PTSA PARENT INFORMATION PRESENTATION
Are you familiar with “vaping” and “juuling”? Many parents are not, but our teens are. Vaping and juuling are forms of e-cigarette use on the rise among suburban teens. Incidents of use on MHS school grounds are up this year and are a growing concern among McLean teachers and administrators. Vape pens and juules are the battery-operated devices that produce vapors for inhalation by heating liquids containing flavorants and other chemicals. Some liquids available include highly-addictive nicotine or THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. The flavor varieties appeal to teens, and the devices are small and inconspicuous, often resembling USB drives. To learn more about vaping, its potential health effects and consequences, as well as how to initiate a conversation with your teen: Join McLean PTSA for “Vaping and Juuling, What’s That?” An information session for parents Brian Maslowski, FCPS Office of Student Safety & Wellness, Presenter The first step to helping our teens navigate risky behaviors is to become informed ourselves.
