The PTA will be hosting movie night tomorrow at 6:00pm. The movie will be Despicable Me 3. Every child must be accompanied and supervised by a parent.
Would you like to design the t-shirt that will be worn by the basketball players in this year’s game between Oak Hill and Lees Corner? Students in all grades are eligible to enter. Entries are due Tuesday, January 23rd. There will be a basket in the office for you to turn in your drawing. A flyer will be sent home in today's Wednesday folder with further details.
Our feeder middle
schools have shared some important information with us regarding middle school
transition. Please review the dates below and contact Kimberly Gallagher at
kagallagher1@fcps.edu if you have any questions or concerns.
**New this year**
Students eligible
for Advanced Academic Program Level IV services and who are currently attending
a Level IV center (Oak Hill) will be assigned to their designated Level IV
middle school center for the next school year. This means that Oak Hill
Level IV students zoned for Franklin Middle School will be automatically
assigned to Rachel Carson Middle School in January. Parents who want
to change this need to notify both middle schools -- base and center--so the
student can be “released” from one and “picked up” by another. The deadline for
transfers from the center to the base school is
April 1.

Stay up-to-date on school bus arrivals with FCPS' bus delay notification system.
This system provides parents with timely notification of late bus route
information. Access it directly or use the FCPS Mobile
App (available in the iTunes or Google Play stores). Morning bus route
information will be available until noon. Afternoon bus route information will
be available from 1 to 7 p.m.
E-Notify (BlackboardConnect) email messages will also be sent to
announce bus delays.
Need assistance or have questions? Visit the FCPS Transportation page for more
information.
When bad weather or other emergency situations occur, it may be necessary for FCPS to cancel, delay, or close schools early. Click here for a short video about Winter Weather Decisions. In the case of emergency for a weather-related closing, delay, or early dismissal, the FCPS website will automatically include an alert at the top of each page with the appropriate information. Due to the speed of updating, the official @FCPSnews Twitter account (with blue checkmark) is generally the first and fastest mode of communication. Other communication channels will be updated as quickly as possible including email, text, website, other social media, and news stations. Please be aware, due to the large volume of emails sent there will likely be a lag between the FCPS Twitter alert and receipt of an email in your inbox. The FCPS Weather Cancellation Procedures page is located here.
Parents and students should have a well-communicated plan in place in the event of these emergency situations. Children need to know where to go or what to do if a parent will not be home.
When there is a two-hour delay, students can begin arriving at 10:20am. Prior to this time there is no adult supervision available and students should not be dropped off at school.
The Fairfax County School Board has adopted the standard school
year calendar for the 2018-19 school year, which starts school for students
on Tuesday, August 28, and ends the school year on Thursday, June 13, 2019.
The calendar provides a three-day break for Thanksgiving—November
21-13. Winter break for students is scheduled from December 24 through January
4, 2019, and spring break is scheduled for the week of April 15, 2019.
See the 2018-19 school year calendar.
Oak Hill Teachers
and Students have been implementing Project Based Learning (PBL) throughout our
classrooms. Project Based Learning is a way to engage students in
authentic learning and to make applications to the real world by working
collaboratively. Part of this work is to present to and/or work with
people who have specific roles so that students can see that what they are
learning is used in the real world. For example, last year's 2nd graders
created comic book covers with Famous Americans and we had an artist who
creates superheroes come in to give tips on what goes on a cover. We know
we have many experts right here in our Oak Hill community that could support
this work. Please fill out this survey
if you would be willing to be part of a list for teachers to reach out to in
order to support the learning in our classrooms. These could be your
everyday job or hobby, don't worry if it isn't fancy, we need lots of
variety. Thank you so much!
If
you purchased a device for your child this holiday season, FCPS wants to help
you support your child in the online world. If the device is
internet-enabled, please consider the following tips and resources:
Educate
yourself and your children. Digital
citizenship is learning process and your child will need sustained support from
parents and teachers. Visit bit.ly/fairfaxdigcit for a fun and interactive
parent-child course that can help your family start conversations about
navigating the online world.
Establish
rules and expectations. Have
you thought about the rules you want to establish with your child for setting
up accounts and the privacy settings you expect your child to use? What
are your expectations and how will you monitor your child’s online activities?
Not sure where to start? Try these tip
sheets,
media
agreements, and device contracts.
Help
your child monitor and manage their screen time. It’s
easy to spend hours on a device, especially when it's new. Use these guidelines and strategies to help your children learn
to monitor and manage their screen time.
Discuss
privacy settings and accounts. Teach
your child to protect their personal information and model the use of privacy
settings. Discuss why these settings are important and teach them how to
make privacy setting choices for every app and service they use. This resource can help you get started.
Give
your child action steps. Discuss
potential situations that may arise before they happen and give your child
action steps. Do they know what to they can do if cyber bullied, harassed, or
if someone sends them something they don’t want to see? Every difficult
situation is an opportunity to help prepare them for life beyond your home.
These short parent advice videos, which can be filtered by
topic and age, can help you identify action steps you can share with your
child.
Teach
your child to assess risks and make good choices. Online
communication is public and permanent. Talk with your children regularly and
remind them that what they do online can impact future opportunities. Their
online reputation can also affect their relationships in the face to face
world.
Counselors,
teachers, and school staff have and will continue to teach digital citizenship
to all Oak Hill students.
