January updates from Mrs. Harper

Dear Great Falls Families,

In support of our annual partnership with Rise Against Hunger, the Langley pyramid of elementary, middle and high schools are coming together on Saturday, February 3rd at Colvin Run Elementary School with a goal to prepare 100,000 meal packages for schools and orphanages around the world.

Our goal this year is to raise $29,000.  We are accepting student donations, at school, through January 19th.  Parents and families are encouraged to donate online through this date as well.

Each meal package costs 29 cents to make ($15 = 50 meal packages, $30 = 100 meal packages and $100= 350 meal packages.)

If all of our students in the Langley pyramid donated $3.00, we would reach our goal of $29,000.

You can donate, seamlessly, at the following link:

Stop Hunger Now Donation Link

If your company makes matching contributions, please consider having them join you in making a tax-deductible donation at the link above.

We package meals based on the amount of money raised. Our goal of $29,000 provides 100,000 meals.  With each meal feeding 5-6 people, we impact 500,000 individuals around the world.  Annually, this has been a tremendous learning platform for our students as they learn to engage in helping others while further understanding how their role in a school community impacts their global community.

You may register for the event at the following link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0c45aba62fa1fc1-great

If you have children at multiple schools, please register your child with their current school.

Please note, volunteers must register for the event and pick a time slot.  Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

Thank you ahead of time for your consideration--

Sara Harper

Trikes for Tots

As part of their 6th grade winter party, our students joined forces with the Fairfax County Police Department to build tricycles to donate to local charities. These tricycles went to kids whose parents didn’t have enough money to buy presents for the holidays.

Thank you for a wonderful staff holiday breakfast!

We would like to thank the PTA Hospitality Committee and all of our parents for the staff holiday breakfast on Friday, December 15th.  It was so nice to sit down, relax, and enjoy each other’s company before the start of the school day. The food was delicious, and everyone was grateful for the gift cards received.  The time and effort put into this breakfast was very evident and as always, very much appreciated by the staff.

As is always the case, we consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have such a fantastically supportive community and PTA.

Artists on Exhibit

GFES student artwork was published in the most recent issue of the Great Falls Connection. I am proud to say that all of the artwork that was submitted was selected for the newspaper. 3rd grader, Willow Choi’s artwork was chosen for the cover! If you would like to take a look, the digital version is here.

In addition, artwork by our students is on display at the Starbucks in Great Falls Center.  Make sure to check it out in the back conference room on your next coffee run!

FCPS Social Work Services writes a quarterly newsletter, and we've added it to our school website.   The newsletter is a wealth of information;   this month, it features articles on resilience and one on screen time.   Click here to check it out!

Holiday Technology and Digital Citizenship Message

During the holidays, many families likely made technology purchases for their children. The Instructional Services Department has prepared messages for schools to send to their families that will provide supportive resources and encourage them to establish technology rules and expectations and discuss digital citizenship at home. Use your GSuite account to access a News You Choose message and a selection of social media messages.

Weather Cancellation Procedures

When bad weather or other emergency situations occur, it may be necessary for FCPS to cancel, delay, or close schools early. Parents and students should have a well-communicated plan in place in the event of these emergency situations. It is extremely beneficial if children know where to go or what to do if a parent will not be home.

The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority any time a decision must be made regarding school closures and delays during a weather situation. FCPS officials review information from emergency management and state highway administrators about road conditions, and school personnel inspect the conditions of roads, sidewalks, and FCPS parking lots and bus lanes.

FCPS tries to make decisions in the evening, taking into account that parents need time to make proper arrangements. But when there is a lot of uncertainty, we wait to get the latest morning forecast.

FCPS provides information about closings and delays in many ways including:

•     Posted on www.fcps.edu

•     Posted to the FCPS Twitter and Facebook pages

•     Email and text messages sent to parents and employees

•     Email sent to News You Choose subscribers of Delayed Openings and School Closings

•     Posted on FCPS cable Channel 21 (Cox Communications, Reston Comcast, and Verizon cable customers only).

•     Area radio and television stations.

Japanese Immersion Program Enrollment for 2018-2019

Parents of kindergarten students interested in having their child enter the Japanese Immersion Program for the 2018-2019 school year are invited to attend an information night on Wednesday, January 24, at 7:00 p.m. in our school cafeteria.  If the meeting is cancelled due to inclement weather, it will be rescheduled for February 7th.

Online registration is available by clicking here.

Teacher Recommendations/Student Applications

If you would like your child’s teacher to complete recommendations for private testing or private schools, please bring these requests directly to the main office rather than the teacher.  It is necessary to complete a Release of Confidential Information form before the paperwork can be forwarded to the teacher.  Envelopes, stamped and pre-addressed to the receiver, are also required.

Lost and Found

Is your child missing her/his jacket, lunch box, sweat shirt?  Please come to the cafeteria and look for any missing items before January 25th.

Our Lost & Found will be cleaned out and all items will be donated to a local charity on January 30th.
