Student Services Updates

Academic Advising season is quickly coming upon us!  This is the time for your child to select their courses for the upcoming school year.  Although it may seem far away, we use this data for planning and staffing our schools with the needs of our students.  As course selection sheets come home and you are helping your child determine the best level/fit for each core area, be sure to consult with your child’s current teacher for help with recommending placement.  You child will meet 1:1 with their designated school counselor in the upcoming months to go over these selections in detail and to discuss their individual academic goals.  This year, Franklin Middle School is fortunate to participate in an online course selection pilot, where students of Rising 7th and 8th grades ONLY, will be able to select their courses online through their individual Student VUE accounts.  Detailed instructions for enrollment will be sent home along with paper course selection sheets to guide families through this process.  We look forward to this technological advancement as an FCPSOn school community!

Within this timeframe, there will be some important dates that we want you to keep on your calendar:

Deadline for AAP Level IV Referrals – January 12, 2018

Parents or guardians of seventh grade students may initiate the full-time AAP Level IV screening process by completing and submitting an Advanced Academic Programs Level IV Referral Form to your child’s school counselor  no later than January 12, 2018.  No late referrals will be accepted. AAP Level IV services are available to students in grades 3-8.  Students may be found eligible for full-time placement in AAP Level IV Center classes through a central selection process and receive a highly challenging instructional program in science, social studies and English.  Multiple criteria are reviewed by a central selection committee to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. More information about AAP services available at the middle school level may be found on the FCPS public website at:  https://www.fcps.edu/academics/middle-school-academics-7-8/advanced-academics.  If you have any questions, you can contact Lea Fadden at Lea.Fadden@fcps.edu.

FCPSOn and Technology Updates

Here are a few reminders about the care and maintenance of your child's FCPSOn HP ProBooks.

  • Very Important - Please make sure students shutdown computers if sitting idle for long periods of time. This will ensure a longer battery life and protects the cooling fan and other computer components.
  • Please make sure students are charging computers each night.
  • Remember, if charger cable or case are lost or damaged, families are responsible for reimbursing the school inorder to get a new one.
  • Students can now fix issues with audio and access to blackboard on their own by opening up System Center from the Windows start menu
  • Having issues with connecting the HP Probook to your home network? FCPS is aware of the issue and working to figure out a fix.  As we learn more we will let you know

Did you purchased a device for your child this holiday season?

FCPS wants to help you support your child in the online world.  If the device is internet-enabled, please consider the following tips and resources:

Educate yourself and your children.

Digital citizenship is learning process and your child will need sustained support from parents and teachers. Visit bit.ly/fairfaxdigcit for a fun and interactive parent-child course that can help your family start conversations about navigating the online world.

Establish rules and expectations.

Have you thought about the rules you want to establish with your child for setting up accounts and the privacy settings you expect your child to use?  What are your expectations and how will you monitor your child’s online activities?  Not sure where to start? Try these tip sheetsmedia agreements, and device contracts.

Help your child monitor and manage their screen time.

It’s easy to spend hours on a device, especially when it's new.  Use these guidelines and strategies to help your children learn to monitor and manage their screen time.

Discuss privacy settings and accounts.

Teach your child to protect their personal information and model the use of privacy settings.  Discuss why these settings are important and teach them how to make privacy setting choices for every app and service they use.  This resource can help you get started.

Give your child action steps.

Discuss potential situations that may arise before they happen and give your child action steps. Do they know what to they can do if cyber bullied, harassed, or if someone sends them something they don’t want to see? Every difficult situation is an opportunity to help prepare them for life beyond your home. These short parent advice videos, which can be filtered by topic and age, can help you identify action steps you can share with your child.

Teach your child to assess risks and make good choices.

Online communication is public and permanent. Talk with your children regularly and remind them that what they do online can impact future opportunities. Their online reputation can also affect their relationships in the face to face world.
