Rising 9th Grade Schedule of Events:
5:00-6:00pm: Optional Breakout Session for parents of rising 9th grade students in Special Education programs in Room E146 (Chorus Room).
6:00-6:30pm: Student Panel for rising 9th grade students and their parents in the Auditorium.
6:30-7:00pm: Core subject teachers (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies) present on 9th grade curriculum in the Auditorium.
7:00-7:30pm: Graduation Requirements for rising 9th grade students and parents, and a brief overview of the new AP test fees in FCPS in Auditorium.
All Rising 9th through 12th Grade Schedule:
6:00-8:00pm: Electives and Curriculum Fair for all students (rising 9th through 12th) in both cafeterias. Learn about the different classes students can take at Woodson High School and at the Academies (most academy class are for rising 10th-12th graders).
Welcome Matt Dell'Orso
Welcome to Matt Dell’Orso, our “new” school
counselor for students with the last names A-Cah. Mr. Dell’Orso has been a
school counselor for 14 years, in addition to teaching at West Virginia
University and Shepherd University. He has worked at Westfield High School,
Centreville High School, and was here at Woodson during the 2015-2016 school
year. Mr. Dell’Orso looks forward to meeting all of his students and working
with the Woodson community!
Korean Teacher Exchange
Last year, Woodson ESOL teacher Ann Padgett-Wernig was awarded a special opportunity to participate in a teacher exchange program in Gyeongnam, Korea. This past summer she engaged in international learning and teacher opportunities that have greatly enriched her teaching experience here at Woodson. As part of the exchange, FCPS and Woodson will welcome Ms. Padgett-Wernig's host teacher, Ms. Hyegan from Gyeongnam in January.

Woodson Science Fair
The Woodson Science Department will be holding their
Science Fair the morning of Tuesday, January 30th (with a snow date
of Friday, February 2nd). We are looking for parents and community
members with a science or engineering background to volunteer as judges. This
will be a wonderful opportunity for students to present their work and to
receive feedback from community members in the field. If interested in serving as a judge,

Loyal Heart, a New Musical
Woodson senior Paul Hardin makes history come alive with a
new musical Loyal Heart which tells
the story of young King Henry VIII, who jousted under the name Sir Loyal Heart
in 1511, and his wife Katherine of Aragon. To tell this tale, Paul composed 24 original
songs, fully orchestrated for a 16 piece pit orchestra. This musical, asking the question, “Who is
the Loyal Heart?”, is filled with historic references in a fun-filled production.
Paul has gathered 50 busy high school students across four
different disciplines of drama, chorus, orchestra and band to volunteer their
time to make Loyal Heart come to
life. As a completely student-led production, Loyal Heart gives participating
students a chance to have leadership roles in music direction, set design and
choreography. Loyal Heart offers the complete cast and crew the unique opportunity
to create a new musical in high school.
The Blank Theater in Los Angeles selected Loyal Heart as a semi-finalist in their
Young Playwrights Festival 2017.
Loyal Heart opens Friday, February 16th at
7:00pm and runs through Saturday, February 17th at 1:00pm at Woodson. The performances are free
and open to the public.

Student Community Service
Tenth grade student Christina Ho spent part of her winter break helping the community at the Falls Church homeless shelter. She created and sold shirts using her own time, money and materials. The proceeds from the shirt sales helped many families through the holiday season. Congratulations, Christina!

Advanced Placement (AP) Test Fees
As
part of the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) FY 2018 Approved Budget, FCPS
has adopted new fees for high school students including Advanced Placement (AP)
test fees. The fees for the first six AP/International Baccalaureate (IB)
tests taken by each student for courses in which they are also enrolled for
high school credit will be paid by FCPS. Students who choose to take one or
more AP/IB tests beyond the six FCPS-funded tests will be charged a fee of $93
per AP test (and $119 per IB test). Please note: Woodson does not offer IB
tests, but IB tests taken at previous FCPS schools will be counted toward
students’ cumulative number of AP/IB tests.
While FCPS
encourages all students to take AP tests for courses in which they are
enrolled, students will have the opportunity to opt out of the test(s) by
completing an opt-out form. To assist in the decision-making process,
students will be provided a report with cumulative AP/IB test history for
courses in which they were also enrolled in FCPS and current AP/IB course
enrollment for courses with an associated test. Woodson’s office of Student
Services will be mailing this opt out form home via U.S. mail by January 12,
2018. Opt out forms are due back to Student Services (E-103) no
later than Friday, February 2, 2018.
Students who qualify for the free and reduced-price meals program and
have submitted the consent to share their free and reduced-price status
will not be charged for these fees in accordance with their waiver selections
on the fee consent form. These forms can be found on the Food and Nutrition
Services, Free and Reduced-Price Meals
web page. The payment of student fees is the responsibility of parents and
guardians. However, for students and families who are undergoing economic
hardships and are financially unable to pay the stated student fees, assistance
is available as noted in the current version of Regulation 2135, Assistance to Students. Please contact your child’s school
counselor to determine your eligibility.
Digital Citizenship in FCPS

Educate yourself and your children.
Digital citizenship is learning process and your child will need sustained support from parents and teachers. Visit bit.ly/fairfaxdigcit for a fun and interactive parent-child course that can help your family start conversations about navigating the online world.
Establish rules and expectations.
Have you thought about the rules you want to establish with your child for setting up accounts and the privacy settings you expect your child to use? What are your expectations and how will you monitor your child’s online activities? Not sure where to start? Try these tip sheets, media agreements, and device contracts.
Help your child monitor and manage their screen time.
It’s easy to spend hours on a device, especially when it's new. Use these guidelines and strategies to help your children learn to monitor and manage their screen time.
Discuss privacy settings and accounts.
Teach your child to protect their personal information and model the use of privacy settings. Discuss why these settings are important and teach them how to make privacy setting choices for every app and service they use. This resource can help you get started.
Give your child action steps.
Discuss potential situations that may arise before they happen and give your child action steps. Do they know what to they can do if cyber bullied, harassed, or if someone sends them something they don’t want to see? Every difficult situation is an opportunity to help prepare them for life beyond your home. These short parent advice videos, which can be filtered by topic and age, can help you identify action steps you can share with your child.
Teach your child to assess risks and make good choices.
Online communication is public and permanent. Talk with your children regularly and remind them that what they do online can impact future opportunities. Their online reputation can also affect their relationships in the face to face world.
