Managing Holiday Stress
As the holidays approach, many of us look forward to spending time with family and friends and celebrating the season. However, for people who have been exposed to a traumatic event, such as the loss of a loved one, the holidays may bring up negative feelings. Even for adults and children who have not been exposed to trauma, the holidays can be stressful. Besides financial strains and challenging family interactions, the short days and lack of sunlight in winter can trigger bouts of depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
Here are some tips to help manage holiday stress:
-
Strengthen social connections – Connect or re-connect with positive, caring people in your family's life and accept help and support when needed. Volunteering is another way to make connections and feel better too.
-
Talk about the season – Discuss the variety of traditions that exist and the importance of being open-minded.
-
Set expectations – Depending on a child's age, the holidays are an important time to teach about the value of money, responsible spending and meaningful gifts that don't cost much. We adults can simplify our "to do" list and identify small steps toward accomplishing the most important holiday tasks.
-
Keep things in perspective – Overall, the season is short. We can ask ourselves, what’s the worst thing that could happen this holiday? Our greatest fears may not happen and, if they do, we can tap into our strengths and the help of others to manage the stress. There will be time after the holidays to do things we’ve overlooked or did not have time to do.
-
Take care – It is vital that we pay attention to our own and our family members' needs and feelings. Find fun, relaxing activities to do. Eating, sleeping and exercising regularly help us better manage stress.

Report Card Distribution
We are proudly supporting ParentVUE and hope you have an account and are checking it regularly. If you do not have an account or need help with access, you can contact the Parent Resource Center at 703-207-4074 or your child’s School Counselor. At the high school level, students also have a StudentVUE account, another great tool.
We want you to be aware of report card dates. We will print report cards and distribute them directly to students to bring home, therefore, ask to see your child’s successes around the times listed below. If you do not receive one, please contact your child’s School Counselor.
- 2nd quarter - provided to student week of January 29th, 2018
- 3rd quarter - provided to student week of April 16th, 2018
- Final report card mailed home week of June 25, 2018
Driver Education Certificate Completion 7:00 –9:30 pm
The state of Virginia requires all 10th grade students and their parent/guardian to attend a 90-minute traffic safety program as part of the classroom driver education instruction. This condition must be met before a student will receive a Classroom Driver Education Certificate of Completion (DEC-1 card).
The dates for this year's presentations are:
- April 18, 2018 (Cafeteria)
- May 9, 2018 (Cafeteria)
All programs will begin PROMPTLY at 7:00 pm. There will be no admittance once the program has begun. You are strongly encouraged to mark your calendar now and plan to attend.
Attendance Reminders
School begins promptly at 8:10 a.m. and ends at 2:55 p.m. Please use the 24/7 Hour Attendance Line - 703-207- 4019. Please visit our website for details. You’ll find information about arriving late, leaving early, and what constitutes an excused absence. The automated system that contacts parents for absences goes out at 10:30am and 4:15pm. If you believe you were notified incorrectly, contact your child’s school counselor for clarification.
Although the FCHS Academy is in the same building, all Academies have their own attendance system and it’s best when you call in an absence that you contact both the base school and Academy.
