Dragons in one of our pre-school classes demonstrate the IB Learner Profile caring by helping each other zip their jackets.
Next week starts a luxurious eighteen day winter break. I’m looking forward to spending that time
with my family, recharging, and relaxing.
However, there is a small part of my mind that worries, because I know
that children are better behaved and happier when their life is predictable and
normal. Holidays are by definition the
opposite of predictable and normal. I
fear that I may find myself saying no more than I like. “No, you’ve had enough cookies.” “No, it’s
time to turn off the TV.” “No, the iPad
is sleeping now.” “No, please don’t grab
toys from your brother.” At moments like
these, we need my secret weapon. When
it’s too cold to play outside, I don’t want to spend another penny, and I want
to just say, “Yes, yes, yes!” -- We go to the library. The Reston Regional Library is one of my
children’s favorite places. It is warm
and inviting. The librarians never shush
anybody, and it’s full of all the books we can carry. With a library card you can check out up to
fifty books, so you never have to say, “No.”
My children love sitting and reading in a corner, hugging the giant
stuffed animals in the reading room, and most of all, choosing a big pile of
books to take home. It’s kind of like
Christmas! Happy Holidays and Happy
Reading!
