Principal's Letter, December 8, 2017

December 8, 2017

Dear Waynewood Owls,

What a sensational week!  We had our first concert of the year, and it was absolutely fantastic.  Our music, band, and strings teachers worked incredibly hard to prepare the students, and it showed!  The 5th and 6th grade students did an amazing job at the concert.  The addition of kazoos to the concert was so fun and unexpected.  We can tell that they have been practicing hard for their performances.  A huge kudos to Mr. Reigner, Ms. Janowski, Mrs. Morgan and Mr. Lutter for all their work to prepare our students for a successful performance. Their commitment to our music programs is evident through the huge number of students who choose to participate in Choir, Band and Strings.  We were also treated to a festive environment, thanks to the artwork provided by Mrs. Thomas and Ms. Nigon.  The gym looked like a winter wonderland!

This week was National Inclusive Schools week.  We were so proud of all the great conversations that we heard about inclusion and kindness throughout the building.  We capped the week off with Super Hero day, which was a student favorite!

Our Seasons of Giving program wrapped up last week, and it was a huge success.  The Waynewood community helped 161 children from local schools, providing families with much needed new warm winter clothing. A huge thank you to the room parents and volunteers who sorted through 161 coats, hats and gloves, about 300 pairs of pants, 310 long-sleeved shirts and sweatshirts and 30 pairs of fleecy pajamas! Thank you for all the generous donations.  This community has an amazing way of coming together to support those in need, and it is truly a pleasure to be a part of it.

On Friday, December 15, we will have a school-wide pajama day to celebrate the last day of school before winter break.   As a reminder, December 15th is a full day of school, which means we can enjoy our pajamas all day long.  It will be a cozy day, for sure!

Have a great weekend, keep an eye out for the white stuff….we just might get some snow!

Sincerely,

Katie Cachine, Principal

Alice Berenbaum, Assistant Principal

School and the Office will be CLOSED.
  • Tuesday, January 2nd
School reopens at the regular time.

Holiday Travel and Attendance Reminders

If your holiday travel plans will take your child out of school before or after the regular break please be sure to let the front office know as well as your child’s teacher. You can call the office anytime during the school day at 703-704-7100. If you are picking your child up early, please be sure to send a note and notify the teacher so your child can be ready to come to the office when you arrive at school. We ask that you pick up children before 3:40 pm, as dismissal starts at 4:00 pm.  It is extremely difficult to dismiss students individually when we are preparing for school-wide dismissal.

If you will be on extended travel and your child will miss more than 15 consecutive school days, we will need to withdraw and re-enroll your child upon your return. This is a county regulation.

Deadline for AAP Level IV Parent Referrals is Friday, January 12, 2018!

Parents interested in having their child in grades 2-6 screened for the Level IV Advanced Academic Program must submit referral forms and any other supplemental information by Friday, January 12, 2018.  If you plan to make a referral, please consider turning your paperwork in as early as possible.  This helps the school team to begin preparing your child’s screening file.  Contact Margaret McGuire (MMcGuire@fcps.edu), Waynewood’s Advanced Academic Resource Teacher with questions.

Front Bicycle Rack

The bicycle rack in the front of the school has been temporarily moved back to the grass area so that the construction team can work on the windows above where the rack is usually located.  We anticipate that this work will be completed within a week, and then the rack will be returned to its original location on the sidewalk.
