What's Happening in Fairview Classrooms:
Students share in their own words about what they are learning
November Chatter is now posted
|
Each month students from every K-6 class will post a news bulletin in the form of a blog, video, slide show, letters, or PowerPoint in order to share about the many things they have learned that month. These news bulletins are multi-media and completely student written. Every class has its own unique "Chatter" and the teacher and students choose what media to use in order to produce their monthly Classroom Chatter. For the month of October, classes used I-movie with student voice-overs, PowerPoint slides, Wixi, online blog tool, and a 6th grade class used a Green Screen. Each week, one classroom's Chatter will be featured on our morning news, with each class being featured once during the year. Parents can access all of the Classroom Chatters on Blackboard 24/7 by logging into Blackboard using your Parent Blackboard Account. Once logged in, click on your child's name in the "My Family" section and click on Fairview Student Centered Learning course. All of the Classroom Chatters can be found by clicking on the "Classroom Chatter" button on the left hand side. (If you need a Parent Blackboard account, call the office at 703-503-3700 and request an activation code). Please check out not only your child's classroom, but see what students are learning across all grade levels.
The teachers and ALL staff at Fairview are truly among the most dedicated and hard working folks with whom I have ever had the honor to work. I am grateful to be able to learn from these wonderful people every day. For the holiday season, my hope is that each parent takes a few minutes to submit one or more notes of thanks to Fairview teachers and other staff members for the incredible work they do for the students at Fairview. Your kind notes really can make someone's day! Please use this link to submit your compliments. These compliments are printed out and given to the named staff members as well as hung on our staff compliment bulletin board in the hallway near the front lobby entrance for all to see!
Fairview Chorus Students Perform at the Ellipse
Congratulations to Fairview 5th/6th Grade Chorus for their wonderful performance with Rolling Valley ES students at the Ellipse near the White House in Washington DC. The students sang beautifully for a full thirty minute concert of holiday, winter, and songs of peace. A huge kudos and THANK YOU to Mrs. Jaime Schermer and Mrs. Valerie Junttila for their hard work in making all of the arrangements, organizing fundraisers for the charter bus, and most importantly, for giving of their time to rehearse with our chorus students. Thank you also to all parents who chaperoned or who met us down at the Ellipse to enjoy the concert. It was an impressive performance!

Positivity Project
This week we are introducing the character strength of Hope and Optimism. We will be reading the book, Emmanuel's Dream. This is the true story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah, a boy from Ghana, West Africa who was born with a disabled leg. Despite his disability, Emmanuel figured how to be independent and would hop to school 2 miles each way every day. As a young man, he rode a bike across Ghana to raise awareness, acceptance, and respect for individuals with disabilities.

As December is also Disabilities Awareness month, we have chosen this book because it demonstrates how individuals with disabilities can overcome huge obstacles and do amazing things. The book highlights the importance of hope and optimism coupled with courage, drive, and hard work as essential ingredients to accomplish incredible goals.
