A message from Principal Padgett

Farewell

It is with a heavy heart to share the news that our wonderful art teacher, Ms. Meghan Shelton, will be leaving us at the end of November.  She will be traveling home to New York to spend more time with her family.  Our children have been made aware of her leaving for a couple of weeks and have had time to wish her well on her next journey.  Ms. Shelton played a big role in picking out her successor, Viviana Sanchez.  Throughout this week Ms. Sanchez has taken the time to shadow Ms. Shelton in order to take over on Friday, December 1st.

Advanced Academic Program Info Night

Primary Building Rm 248

This information session is for parents who are interested in having their child screened for Level IV services this Spring. We will discuss what goes into a level IV screening file and what types of work samples are helpful to the central selection committee. We will also review the timeline for the Level IV screening process.

For more information on the level IV referral process, click here.

This event is for families with students in grades 2-6 who are planning to refer their child for screening for level IV AAP Services.

The deadline for referrals is 1/12/18.

Mindfulness

Join us on Monday, December 11th at 6 p.m. for a night of education on mindfulness with Dr. Jane O'Hara and Lindsay Karr.  This strategy is used in our school allowing students the opportunity to ground themselves and de-stress before beginning the school day.

Drawing on the latest research in the field, parents will be provided with simple yet powerful strategies for raising emotionally healthy children. During this workshop, parents will learn about mindfulness and how it can create a more calm and connected family dynamic.

Jane A. O’Hara, Ed. D., has been an administrator in Fairfax County for 10 years and 13 years teaching in public and private schools. She holds a Bachelor’s in English, Masters in English as a Second Language, and a Doctorate on Administration in Statistics and Social Foundations.

She has been practicing and teaching Mindfulness for the past three and a half years. Her certification is in Mindfulness Fundatmentals and Essentials. As a Mindfulness for Educators practitioner, she has been presenting Mindfulness for professional education associations across Virginia. She produces a Mindfulness televised program each morning and beginning in December, will also practice mid-afternoon sessions for students, staff, and faculty each day at Fort Belvoir Upper. As a member of the Fairfax County School Board for Military Connected Youth, she supports programming to benefit you and your children at Fort Belvoir Schools and across FCPS. Her practices have demonstrated significant improvements in behavioral incidences to increase valued instructional time for improving students’ learning.  She is married with three children, two grandchildren, two cats, and two Toto pups. Mindfulness enriches her educational and personal life through her connections with her students, their families, and her family.

Ms. Karr has been teaching in Fairfax County for 12 years. She received her undergraduate degree in English Education from Boston University and Master's degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Virginia.

She completed Mindfulness for Educators training with Mindful Schools. She is the founder and president of Mindful Beginnings, an organization that brings mindfulness programs to students, teachers, and parents throughout the country. As a mother, wife, teacher, and friend, Lindsay invokes mindfulness in various environments and enjoys sharing the practice with others.

Forget to fill out your Impact Aid form?

Help our school raise money!

Your response matters!

A Student/Parent Federal Survey form was sent home on 11/2.  It said “Student-Parent Survey” at the top. Please check backpacks!

A note from Nancy Rowland, the grants coordinator for Fort Belvoir Elementary School Campus with some important information about the Impact Aid form:

Currently our schools have over $2 million in federal funding from DoDEA for enrichment programs like STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics).  This includes programming during the school day, after-school, as well as during the summer.  Additionally we are able to provide “Do the Math,” remediation programs to help our students succeed!  These programs come to our families at no-cost thanks to these very generous grants from DoDEA.

Our eligibility for these grants depends on how many children we serve that are military-connected.  Impact Aid form provides this data to DoDEA.  The more military families we serve, the more money we are eligible to receive!

Please take a few minutes and complete the form and return it to school ASAP – our programming depends on it!   Thank you for your time.

Musical Instruments
Parents, please remind your children to bring their instruments home with them. We have an abundance of instruments left in the building on a regular basis, and just two weeks ago a trumpet went missing. Please encourage your students to practice!
