Have a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving!
The month of November has been a whirlwind of activity for our school. We celebrated Veterans Day and had a Thanksgiving feast. Many of us visited the annual book fair and left with many great books….and a much lighter wallet. Several grade levels went on fields trips. A boy scout troop installed two raised beds for our new herb garden. Many of our families had opportunities to conference with their children’s teachers. For such a short month, it has been a busy one!
Our long anticipated Thanksgiving holiday has finally arrived. Our community certainly deserves the time to relax and enjoy good food and company. It is my hope that over this holiday, everyone has the opportunity to reflect about our gifts and the challenges that comprise our daily life.
As we begin our holiday, the Churchill Road staff and I would like to wish everyone a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our community for its support and endless energy. Our school would not be as successful as it is without the limitless efforts that are spent to support our staff and school programs. We are thankful for your generosity and encouragement!
With thanks from the Churchill Road staff,
Don Hutzel, Principal

What Are You Grateful For?
Miss Diorio’s fourth grade class took some time to
think about what they are thankful for so they could create a “grateful tree”.
Some things the students are thankful for include family, books, food, teachers, piano,
seals, friends, school and much more!
Thanksgiving Plate Makeover
Thanksgiving Break is nearly upon us. The Churchill Road Wellness Committee would like to share the following information on how you can have a MyPlate Holiday Makeover by showcasing how to make healthier food options over the holidays. Instead of being a couch potato after your “first” serving, we encourage you to go for a walk, throw the football, play a backyard game, and spend time with your family doing something active.
We hope you enjoy your break and that you use your time off to do something FUN!

Holiday Giving
November and December are always a time of giving and helping others – this year there are 3 ways our CRS community can assist those less fortunate.
|
Holiday Toy Drive for Dogwood For the last 15 years, CRS has helped our sister school Dogwood Elementary in Reston, VA – where the poverty rate is approximately 80%. Our annual toy drive will be 12/4-12/7. Each year, nearly 400 students receive a gift from the "holiday shop" hosted by the parent liaisons - all made possible by the generous contributions of the CRS community. Learn more at http://www.churchillroadpta.org/holiday-toy-drive-for-dogwood.
Winter Coat Drive Four CRS alumni are organizing a winter coat drive to support Covenant House, a shelter that helps homeless kids escape the streets. New or gently used coats (all sizes, but mostly adult sizes needed), hats and gloves can be donated through December 1st in the front lobby of Churchill Road. Learn more at http://www.covenanthousedc.org or contact m_andreina@yahoo.com with questions.
Escuela Cruz Rosas Rivas Kathy Toussaint Williams, a former assistant principal at CRS, is working with Escuela Cruz Rosas Rivas, a K-5 public school with 320 students in Puerto Rico. The school is preparing to reopen, but needs help with materials and supplies. Those interested in helping can send supplies directly through the school’s Amazon Wish List http://amzn.to/2AzUtaK, or by sending checks addressed to Escuela Cruz Rosas Rivas, RR1 Box 11382, Manati, Puerto Rico 00675.
Wellness: Strengthening Family Bonds Through Board Games
Thanks to the
Thanksgiving holiday, students will have Thursday and Friday off from school,
and parents may also enjoy a day or two off from work. With a little extra time
for family and friends, this week is an ideal time to pull out some board
games. Board games are a great source of entertainment and can beneficially
impact health. Board games are a wonderful way to relax and unwind while
developing logic skills, boosting spatial reasoning, improving critical
thinking, increasing concentration, and enhancing memory function. Board games
bring people together through competitive and cooperative game play and
research has shown the positive feelings experienced while engaged in a board
game helps to release chemicals that fight stress and boost the immune system.
Plus, board games can often promote laughter, increasing endorphins, and an
overall sense of happiness. Enjoy strengthening family bonds through board
games!
Mrs. Lackey's students enjoy some board games during indoor recess.

the year. The dates for
