On Veterans Day, Franklin
Sherman third grade students wrote letters to the veterans who work at the
Pentagon. The veterans from the N97 office were so touched by the letters
that they sent the third grade students a thank you card. The third graders were excited to write letters to
thank veterans for their service to our country, and they were even more excited
that the veterans wrote them back!
Franklin Sherman has baby trout living in the library! The Green Team has been working hard to make sure the baby trout
are comfortable in their new home. In the morning and afternoon, fifth and sixth graders log observations, feed the fish, and check the
water temperature. FSES students are excited about watching the trout grow until it is time for them to be released in the spring.
On Friday, November 17, Franklin Sherman E.S. held its annual Thanksgiving luncheon. Students, parents, and staff shared a traditional turkey feast together in the cafeteria. Thank you to our wonderful PTA volunteers and cafeteria staff for making this year's luncheon another success!

Beginning this week and continuing the week after Thanksgiving break, Franklin Sherman students will be focusing on the character trait of kindness. Students will
have the opportunity to discuss with their classmates what it means to be
kind. They will also examine books, quotes, and video clips to find examples of true kindness. Students will
talk about times that they have been kind and ways that they can be kind in the future. It is our hope
that you will bring this focus into your home as well. Ask your
children about kindness, or even point out times that you have recognized this
trait in them. By recognizing and appreciating one another’s strengths,
students will continue fostering the “Other People Matter” mindset.
All Fairfax County public schools will close two hours early on
Wednesday, November 22, in an effort to help school buses avoid the
increased traffic related to the Thanksgiving holiday. Schools and offices are closed on November 23 and 24.
Classes will resume on November 27.
The Virginia Department of Education has set new
requirements for attendance monitoring, focused on students who accrue five
or more unexcused absences. New VDOE attendance reporting requires certain actions when students have
accrued five, six, or seven full-day unexcused absences. Beginning November 8, 2017, weekly attendance calls will be made to parents
whose students have accrued five or more unexcused absences, requesting that
parents contact the school to develop an attendance plan.
Dear
Families,
Just a
note to let you know that we will not be holding an Affinities Fair this
year. A decision was made that the Affinities Program will take place every
other school year. The Affinities Program will resume during the 2018-2019
school year. Be sure to share this information with your children. Please
let us know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Jill
Scharl and Lisa Malakoff
Each
year, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is eligible to apply for Federal
Impact Aid grant funds. Impact Aid is a federal formula grant program designed
to assist local school districts that enroll federally-connected students.
Federally-connected students are children of active duty uniformed services
personnel, children who live on federal property or in subsidized federal
housing, and children whose parents work on federal property.
FCPS
anticipates receiving about $3,000,000 in unrestricted funds from the Impact
Aid grant. The funds become a part of the school system’s general operating
budget and are critical to maintaining high standards for educational
excellence.
We
need your assistance in identifying students with federal connections to ensure
that FCPS can obtain its fair share of funds from this program. Please complete
the Student-Parent Survey that was sent home for each school-aged student in
your household. Sign and date the form, and return it to your child’s school as
soon as possible. The forms were initially due by November 8, 2017. FCPS
staff will process the information confidentially.
Information
about the Student-Parent Survey can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/impact.
Information
about the Impact Aid program can be found on the U.S. Department of Education’s
website at https://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/oese/impactaid/index.html.
The
staff at Franklin Sherman E.S. dedicate their time and effort to ensure an
incredible educational experience for students, colleagues, and the
community. Please take a moment to consider which FSES employee stands
out as an outstanding teacher, principal, leader, or support employee. To
show your appreciation and support for that staff member, please complete a
nomination form, so his/her hard work can be recognized. The form should only
take 5-10 minutes to complete. However, please include as much
information and detail as possible in order to capture why your nominee is so
outstanding. All nominations will be reviewed by a leadership committee,
and finalists will be celebrated in June 2018. You may nominate up to one
person for each category. Nominations will open on Wednesday, November 1, and
will close on Friday, December 1.

Parents
who would like their child considered for full time placement in the Advanced
Academic Program must submit a Level IV Referral Form. All decisions
regarding full time placement in the Advanced Academic Program are made by a
central selection committee. Parents or guardians may refer students in
grade 2 who are not in the screening pool and students in grades 3-7 by submitting
the Level IV Referral Form. The Level IV Referral Form and optional
materials for students in grades 2-6 are due to the AART, Carrie Reinders,
before the close of the business day on January 12, 2018.
Information and forms are available at Franklin Sherman E.S. and on the FCPS
website at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/elementary-school/current-fcps
. If you have questions, please contact Carrie Reinders at cmreinders@fcps.edu .
Do you know as a part of our Responsive Classroom positive behavior
approach teachers use daily class meetings to build a strong sense of community
and to set children up for success socially and academically? Each day, students
and teachers gather and interact with one another during a combination of these
four purposeful components:
1.Greeting: Students and teachers greet one other by name.
2.Sharing: Students share information about important events
in their lives. Listeners often offer empathetic comments or ask clarifying
questions.
3.Group Activity: Everyone participates in a brief, lively
activity that fosters group cohesion and helps students practice social and
academic skills (for example: reciting a poem, dancing, singing, or playing a
game).
4.Daily Message: Students read and interact with a short
message written by their teacher. The message is crafted to help students focus
on the work they’ll do in school that day.
Student Absences and Late Arrivals
- If your child
arrives after 9:20 a.m., he/she is considered tardy. Please accompany your child into the building
to ensure his/her safety if he/she is late to school.
