Glasgow Community:

On this Thanksgiving week, one of the things I am most thankful for is our incredible Glasgow staff. Last week was a great example of their hard work and dedication.  Whether it is spending time helping students after school, or hosting an Open Campus activity or giving up lunch to serve students a Thanksgiving meal in the cafeteria, they are truly tireless in their dedication to your students.

Every year, Fairfax County Public Schools look to honor several staff members for outstanding excellence in their roles, including awards for: Outstanding Teacher, Outstanding New Teacher, Outstanding Leader (School-Based), and Outstanding Support Employee (School-Based). This year, Glasgow Middle is hoping to nominate individuals in each category for consideration at the pyramid, region, and divisions levels. Glasgow has an amazing staff who deserve recognition and celebration for all of the positive ways they impact our school. Last year one of Glasgow’s nominees, Sarah Beck, was selected as the overall FCPS recipient for the Outstanding Leader award, which was a great encouragement and acknowledgment to the staff as a whole for everything we accomplish with our students.

If you know of an outstanding employee at Glasgow this is the opportunity to speak up! You may nominate an employee in one or more categories. All that is required for a preliminary nomination is a paragraph or two about how this employee demonstrates exceptional work in the criteria for that category. The google form link has more information regarding the criteria for each of these awards. If you are interested in nominating someone please complete the nomination through this Google form link by December 1: http://bit.ly/2lJLpwC

Everything we do at Glasgow is because you give us the tremendous privilege of educating your students. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of their growth and learning.

I hope you have a restful holiday with loved ones. As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Article of the Week

Check out this interesting opinion article recently in the New York Times titled, “Kids, Would You Please Start Fighting” about the importance of students learning the value of thoughtful disagreement. I thought it was fitting for those of you with multiple children before the extended holiday weekend. :)

Attendance Matters, Because Attendance Adds Up!
It is important that your student attends school every day FCPS is in session, unless they are sick or need to be excused for a specific reason. Students who miss 10% or more of the school year (eighteen days per school year, or nine per semester) are less likely to succeed academically than students who attend school regularly. Contact the main office if your Student will be out for one day or longer. It is everyone’s job to ensure that all FCPS students are present, engaged, and accounted for daily. Get more information about attendance policies.

Check out Healthy Minds - New Blog for Parents
