Dear Parents,

As the Thanksgiving Holiday approaches, the Chesterbrook community has much to be thankful.  We have a dedicated and committed staff at Chesterbrook Elementary School that is beyond compare.  In walking the building each day we witness adults, both staff and parents, who are caring, warm, enthusiastic, creative, and professional.  It is hard to imagine having a building full of adults that walk in each day devoted to excellence and the success of all children in their care.  It is our hope that you enjoy this Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends and that you give thanks for the most important thing we have here at this school – each other.

It was wonderful seeing the large number of parents who came to our luncheon to honor our Veterans and celebrate with a Thanksgiving feast.  It was an exciting day for the children and our staff appreciated the support of the parents at every grade level.  In addition, our book fair was well attended and a huge success.  We are looking forward to our upcoming staff/parent basketball game on November 30th.  None of these activities would be possible without our wonderful PTA.  I have never seen a more active group in a school building.  I always wonder how they can juggle all of the events they host within a given month.  I am definitely thankful for their support.

The staff thanks you from the bottom of our hearts for all that you do to support our efforts and hope that you will have a relaxing and enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday.

Sincerely,

Augie and Connie

Stand Up to Bullying Week Coming to Chesterbrook!

During the week of Nov. 27 – Dec. 1st, Chesterbrook will be celebrating Stand Up to Bullying Week.  International “Stand up Day” started in Canada in 2008 when two high school seniors stood up for a classmate being targeted for wearing the color pink.  It has spread in the last decade to schools in the U.S. as we learn about and talk about ways to encourage, help and respect others.  Each day of the week, we will have a different dress up spirit theme and have other activities centered around the daily theme.  See attached flyer for the weeks activities.

Tips for a Healthy Holiday

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Take walks to see holiday decorations and the leaves changing
  • Try to eat normal portions
  • Avoid having too much sugar
  • Laugh with your family; laughing burns calories
  • Create active traditions
  • Exercise if you start to feel stressed
  • Happy Holidays!

Promoting physical activity starts at home. A few fun ways you can promote good habits:

  • Organize whole-family activities like biking, hiking, and camping.
  • Encourage children’s physical activity habits by helping to build skills and providing equipment.
  • Set a good example by being physically active yourself
  • Limit screen time spent on TVs, computers, and phones.
  • Play movement game systems such as Wii Fitness
  • Provide toys that encourage physical activity like jump ropes, kites, and bikes.
  • Go to local parks and playgrounds to not only play but connect with other children.

Start small, have fun, and watch your life change for the better by making physical activity a part of your child’s life every day.

Sincerely,

Mr. Levesque and Mrs. Sink

5th Grade

The Fifth grade  just wrapped up the song “Simple Gifts”.  We also listened to and watched the ballet “Appalachian Spring” by Aaron Copland and choreography by Martha Graham.    We are also doing some listening activities that  demonstrate their vocabulary usage as well as creative thinking skills.

By the end of 1st quarter your child could:

  • Know the words, melody and the history behind the song “The Star Spangled Banner”
  • Play the recorder recognizing notes d-E (an octave +1), all basic rhythms, and dotted rhythms.
  • Watch a film clip with its accompanying music and use musical vocabulary to describe what they hear.

By the end of 1st quarter your child could:

  • Know all 5 Armed forces songs and be able to sing them using proper singing techniques.
  • Sing their class’s song in their head voice.

2nd Grade

In Second grade we have been using our musical vocabularies!  We had learned some special songs to accompany a Russian story “Bony Legs” (Baba Yaga).  We learned all about Modest Mussorgsky’s famous piece of music “Pictures at an Exhibition”, and the pictures of Victor Hartmann that inspired the composition.  We used all of the musical vocabulary words we learned to predict what we would hear based on the picture, and describe what we did hear when we listened to the piece.  We are now beginning to write a piece of music in groups for rhythm instruments for our own pictures.

By the end of 1st quarter your child could:

  • Understand and use the following vocabulary words:  Tempo, largo, andante, moderato, allegro, vivace, dynamics, piano, mezzopiano, mezzoforte, forte, fortissimo, pianissimo, major, minor.
  • Recognize the following notes and clap them:  whole, half, quarter, eighth. (and their accompanying rests).
  • Recognize the following notes and their accompanying rests by names and lengths (and be able to clap them) :  whole, half, quarter, eighth. (and their accompanying rests).

1st Grade

In First Grade, we have been expanding on the things we learned in Kindergarten.  We listened for high and low and sang pumpkin songs, but we also learned about the staff.  They learned that the staff has 5 lines and 4 spaces (just like our hand has 5 fingers and 4 spaces between them) and when the music goes higher on the staff, the sound gets higher.  When the notes go lower on the staff, we can expect the music to sound lower.  We have also worked with rhythm.  We have been reviewing how to read and perform rhythms as a class and small groups.

By the end of 1st quarter your child could:

  • Listen for high and low in a piece of music and understand how the difference of sound would change the placement of notes on the staff.
  • Sing a song in their singing voice and do accompanying movements to the beat of the song.
  • Recognize the following notes and their accompanying rests by names and lengths (and be able to clap them) :  whole, half, quarter, eighth.

Kindergarten

The Kindergarteners have been working with the musical opposites of high and low, fast and slow, and loud and quiet.  We have been singing all kinds of fall songs. We also have been learning about notes by clapping “tricky” sets of notes that are on the board.  We have also worked with following directions with the rhythm band instruments:  When to play them, how to play them, and what to do when it is not our turn to play.

By the end of 1st quarter your child could:

  • Be able to sing in head voice
  • Know the names and the correct ways to play several of the rhythm band instruments.
  • Follow the movement of a melody, distinguishing high and low, fast and slow.
  • Recognize the following notes by their length and be able to clap them: whole, half, quarter, eighth.  (and their accompanying rests).
  • Use movement to express what they are hearing in a piece of music.
  • Differentiate between hearing a beat and hearing a rhythm.

Choir

We are continuing with some pieces for our upcoming concert (Wednesday, November 29th).  Both 5th and 6th grade choir are combining for this performance. Please let Mrs.Ater know if your student will not be in attendance.

Continue to practice at home using Blackboard. Log in, look at the “CES School Information” page, click the “General Music” tab , and scroll to the bottom of the page for the “5th/6th Choir” folder. You can practice at home by listening to the recordings and singing alone.
