Veteran's Day Banner

Principal's Note

Dear Rocky Run Families:

There are many good things happening at Rocky Run MS.  Today we celebrated Veteran's day through many classroom activities including writing letters to veterans.  We also thanked our active duty and retired military families through a Veteran's Day breakfast in their honor this morning.  We greatly appreciate the character strength of Bravery, the Positivity Project trait for this week, that our military members demonstrate for us each and every day.  We are grateful for their service and sacrifice.

It was my pleasure to recognize our Raise the RAM students of the month this week.  Students were selected by the teachers on their team for consistently modeling our school wide expectations of Respect, Accountability, and Motivation.  You can see the list of students of the month below.

As the Thanksgiving holiday quickly approaches, we will turn our P2 focus to Gratitude.  Students and staff will be sharing the many things they are thankful for and the ways they can share their gratitude in our school community.  I encourage you to share your gratitude through our Thank the Ram link.

I always welcome your feedback, questions and suggestions.  Please feel free to reach out to me at any time.  I hope to see you at Rocky Run very soon.

Sincerely,

-Amy Goodloe

Attendance Monitoring and Intervention

New VDOE attendance reporting requires certain actions when students have accrued five, six, or seven full-day unexcused absences. Beginning November 8, 2017, weekly attendance calls will be made to parents whose students have accrued five or more unexcused absences, requesting that parents reach the school to develop an attendance plan.

Parents should fill out the Request for Prearranged Absence Form (available in the main office) prior to the absent days. Based on FCPS Regulation 2234.7, absences for 'family and/or other vacations, child care situations, missed school bus, non-school-related activity, or other reason unacceptable to the principal or his or her designee", are unexcused. FCPS encourages family trips during scheduled school vacations and strongly discourages such trips during the school year because these absences interrupt the continuity of learning. Student absences for chronic or long-term illness may require medical documentation.

Students with a prearranged absence will be responsible for assignments, homework and tests. If the absence is not approved and the student does not attend school, the absences will be unexcused. Teachers are not obligated to provide make-up work or to administer missed tests.

According to state law, any student absent from school for 15 consecutive days regardless of reason will be withdrawn from school. Parents will need to reenroll their students on their own.

Please contact your child's counselor or an administrator if you have any questions.

Positivity Project - GRATITUDE

You are aware of and thankful for good things that happen.

Starting Monday and lasting until Thanksgiving, students are learning about gratitude. Gratitude is the quality of feeling and expressing thankfulness and appreciation. It is an affirmation that there is goodness in other people and the world, and that we have received that goodness. A leading expert, Robert Emmons, calls gratitude a “relationship-strengthening emotion because it requires us to see how we’ve been supported and affirmed by other people.”

Please be on the lookout for opportunities to show gratitude throughout the next two weeks! We have many exciting things planned!

Check out the character card for this trait!
