Key MS Parent News You Choose - Monday, Oct. 30 - Friday, Nov. 10
It’s hard to believe this is the last week of 1st quarter! We hope all students “finish strong!”
We’ve had a ton of awesome activities these past two weeks! Thanks for all our students and families for making such events so great: SCA Red Ribbon Week, Step Afrika assembly, Kennedy Center Field Trip, Battle of the Books, our Fall Music Showcase, Bullying Awareness Training, civics Court Tours and our Teen Read Week! We want to also thank all parents and loved ones who came out to our Fall Music Concert, PTA Meeting, and Parent Coffee!
PTA: Congratulations to our Key MS PTA Board who was elected last week! President: Michelle McMarlin; Vice President: Doris Coles; Treasurer: Jennifer Killmer; Secretary: Karla Purdleiner. Mark your calendars now: we will meet at 7pm on the library on: Nov 14, Jan 9, Feb 13, March 13, April 10, and May 8. All are encouraged to attend! More information under PTA news below.
Monthly Student Traits: Students need to be taught about the specific character traits we expect of them. At Key, we focus on the IB Learner Profile traits and teach one each month. We then recognize students who especially exemplify the trait each month. We teach these traits through videos, powerpoints, and lessons in 5th period.. So far, we’ve done: September - Caring. October - Inquirer. Next is November - Principled: We act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences. We are connecting our PBIS anchor respect to being principled. Ask your student how they can act principled at school and at home. Looking ahead, here’s our plan for the rest of the year: December - Thinker. January - Communicator. February - Balanced. March - Open-Minded. April - Risk-Taker. May - Knowledgeable. June - Reflective.
Veteran’s Day Exhibit: Key Middle School would like to honor members of the Armed Forces, both past and present, who are part of the Key Community. We are creating a Veteran’s Day Exhibit in the main hall that will display the names of staff members and family members or extended family of students who are in the Armed Forces or are a veteran of the Armed Forces. If you would like your family member to be included in the exhibit, please share their name, branch of service, and relationship to the student. You may also include a photo if you have one. Please email the information to Laura Ballou, SUBJECT: Veteran’s Day Exhibit, no later than Tuesday, November 7th at liballou@fcps.edu, or drop anything off at our main office, ATTN: Laura Ballou, before the deadline. Thank you for your service!
Nov 9 Parent Coffee: Key Middle School invites parents to attend 1 of 2 Parent Coffees on November 9th in the Lecture Hall. The first is from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and the 2nd is from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The topic is Personal Safety and Parent Awareness, presented by Officer Grace, our Key School Resource Officer. We will have Spanish interpreters on hand for both presentations. Please choose the session most convenient for your schedule. We look forward to seeing you at either 9:30 a.m. OR 6:30 p.m. for this important presentation.
Outstanding Employees at Key: While we have many outstanding teachers and staff here at Key Middle School, we wanted you as the community to be able to nominate in our annual Fairfax County awards. If a certain teacher or staff member has done something to make your experience with FCPS above and beyond, please feel free to click this link to nominate in one or various categories. https://goo.gl/forms/Bw9SYbfRC8xpccSF3 Nominations open on November 1, 2017 and will close on December 1, 2017. Categories are described in the forms.
If you are uncertain or have any questions, you may contact our awards liaison at tarestino@fcps.edu.
Money for Key! Please make sure you’ve designated Key MS as your A+ Rewards if you shop at Giant: https://giantfood.com/school-rewards/ Also, start saving your Box Tops (NJHS will help submit!) and sign up/shop online with discounts whereby Key MS can get money through eScrip (looks like there’s a dining out deal too!) http://www.escrip.com/ After all, every dollar counts!!!!
SIS Reports at End of Quarter: FCPS Weekly Progress Reports generated through SIS will not be sent to parents between Wednesday, Nov.1, and Sunday, Nov.12, while first quarter grading is completed and report cards generated. It is normal practice for no reports to go out while teachers finalize grades.
Advisory Intervention: We are always looking to find additional time within our school day to support students. “Advisory Intervention” has begun. We have two week blocks of time where collaborative teams have identified students who would benefit from additional time and support on a specific skill. If a student is selected to attend, their teacher will notify them ahead of time and they will report to a session to work on the identified skill for this block of time.
Let’s Communicate! For more information check out our school website at https://keyms.fcps.edu/ and follow us on Twitter: @KeyMS and @KeyActingP

Threat Assessment Modules:
Fairfax County Public Schools has a well-established policy and protocol for responding to threats of violence in the schools. To help parents and older students learn more about the role they can play in keeping schools safe, we have collaborated with the Youth Violence Project of the Curry School of Education, University of Virginia to develop short videos with useful information. These brief modules were developed for parents and children aged 12 and up, and you may want to watch the student video with your child to answer any questions which may arise. To access these modules go to www.schoolthreatassessment.com and use parent code pgvsdt and student code sy8zk2 as a password.
