Virginia Department of Education Special Education Parent Survey

From Joanna Ladino, PTSO Special Education Chair: Please take the time to fill out this short survey which closes on Halloween! Your voice is wanted and needed.

In an effort to ensure that the Commonwealth of Virginia continues to achieve success in special education compliance, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is planning a series of trainings for local educational agencies (school divisions) ...entitled "Back to Basics." The VDOE understands that parents, advocates, and other community stakeholders have first-hand knowledge of concerns and issues when engaging in the special education process. Thus, we invite you to participate in and complete the following survey. Your input will be used to inform the VDOE of additional topics of regulatory compliance and IEP development that should be included in the "Back to Basics" initiative. Click here for the survey, which will close on Halloween

Sports Highlights

Volleyball

The theme this week was mental toughness when the teams had two away games and did not let any setbacks keep them from victory. On Tuesday, 10/17 they played at Lake Braddock. Freshmen won 2-0, and JV took them to 3 sets, winning 2-1. The Varsity Cavaliers lost their first set 16-25, but came out swinging and won the next three (25-10, 25-20, 25-15) to win the match. Cool heads and consistent serving helped them stay the course. 4 players had 100% perfect serving that night: Katie Parks (4 aces), Sophia Mackin (2 aces), Sarah Parks (1 ace), and Hannah McHale (1 ace).

On Thursday, 10/19 the Cavaliers went to West Springfield, where they won AGAIN. Freshmen won 2-0, and JV won 2-0. These teams are on a roll! The Varsity team had a hard-fought 5-set battle (25-20, 14-25, 25-20, 18-25, and 15-5). Sophomore Olivia Guerra brought amazing energy on and off the court, right down to the winning kill. Senior captain Sophia Mackin was setting, digging, hitting, and serving her heart out. It has been a thrilling season so far! If you haven't been to a game yet, come out to our last home game, also Senior Night, and cheer them on against Robinson this Tuesday, October 24.

Girls Cross Country

This past week most of the girls’ seasons came to an end with one final race packed week. Over the weekend all the girls participated in the Milestat Invitational. The Varsity Ladies did extremely well placing 7th overall with their top scorer Gracie Eidson breaking 19 minutes for the first time. The next race was our JV girls, finishing with the top scorer being senior Maameyaa Asiamah. The day of racing concluded with the Freshman race with Issabella Decarlo as Woodson’s top scorer. On Wednesday, the JV season came to its grand finale with the final district meet at Wakefield Park. The top five scorer in that meet were Maameyaa Asiamah, Emily Gao, Catherine DeScisciolo, Christina Lee, and Emma Brahmey respectively.

Boys Cross Country

A majority of the boys’ cross country season came to an end this past week with two great races to finish off a great year. Over the past weekend the Milestat Invitational saw some amazing performances from all three of the day’s races. In the Varsity race the boys placed 9th overall with their top scorer being Jack Leech. For the JV boys, John Gilligan walked away with a first-place overall win for Woodson.  Amazing! Last but certainly not least, the freshman race’s top scorer was Sean Duble. On Wednesday, the final district meet saw a strong showing for the JV boys with the top five scorers being Paulus Lee, Sean Stohlman, Naseer Haynes-Alvaraz, Kal Swedish, and Kevin Todd respectively.

Woodson Athletic Boosters would like to thank its sponsors: Paisano’s Pizza, Debbie Dogrul Associates, Elevation Burger, JL Tree Service.
