From the Principal's Desk:
Good day,
Each month, teams will be recognizing students for
“ROARing” with character. Students will be selected for demonstrating
positive character traits. We were thrilled to celebrate students in September as we focused on kindness.
We also initiated a monthly teacher recognition program this year. In September, we celebrated:
Congratulations to all our students and teachers!
NJHS Candidates Selected and
Important Dates
The National Junior Honor
Society Committee has reviewed over 200 candidate applications and our
2017-2018 NJHS candidates were selected. Candidates received an email to
their fcpsschools.net account between October 19 – 20. The first mandatory
candidate meeting is on October 25 in the GIR during 1st block after school. The second
mandatory candidate meeting is on November 2 in the GIR during 1st block after school.
Thank you to all the students
who applied this year. Kilmer can’t wait to see NJHS “Make a Difference!”
Please contact NJHS
co-sponsors, Liz Hild or Megan McCasland at EBHild@fcps.edu or MLMccasland@fcps.edu
with questions.
National Junior Honor
Society Committee Looking for Community Partners!
Kilmer NJHS candidates will
be starting their Service Learning Projects in the beginning of November. The
committee is looking for community partners for our student groups. We know
many of you have ties to/work with community groups that students could work
with once they identify what their focus will be. We would love to hear from
you if you could help us! This year we would like to compile a list of
community partners and the contact information to provide to students so we can
all help each other. Please send an email with the name of the organization, the
mission and contact information to be included in this list to Mrs. Stefanie
Hession at sehession@fcps.edu
Digital Citizenship
This
week we celebrated digital citizenship. The students were shown the
following tips each day on the morning announcements:
Tuesday:
All week long we will have reminders and tips of how you can be Internet
Awesome! Always ask yourself before you post: Do I feel good about doing
this? Or do I feel as though I’m doing something wrong? Am I harming others? Am
I harming myself? Am I still true to who I am on the inside? Would I do this or
say this in person, with people I know?
Wednesday:
Today’s Be Internet Awesome tip is to always protect your stuff! Most of us have things on the web that we want to keep safe. One of the
best ways to keep those things safe is to make sure that you have set strong
passwords on your accounts. Don’t share them with anyone, even your best
friend!
Thursday: Today’s Be Internet Awesome Tip is to avoid
scams! Everyone knows you never take candy from a stranger. The same principle
applies online. If someone offers you some new shoes, an iPad or told you that
you won a trip to Hawaii - you should be suspicious. This might seem harmless,
but these could be very dangerous ways to lure you in and steal your passwords
or even your identity.
Friday: Today’s Be Internet Awesome Tip is Be Positive!
Being positive on the web means that you should only post, comment or forward
something, if you wouldn’t mind someone doing the same to you. Because even
small quick actions online can have a lasting impact.
Here
are some additional resources for you to use when speaking about digital safety
with your family: Common

lunch with a smaller group of students or just come and be honored by our
school community! Please e-mail Mrs. Stefanie Hession at sehession@fcps.edu to express interest and

Quarter Enrichment Activities during PAWS – Enrichment Activity sign-up ends on
Monday, October 23!
Last year,
Kilmer Middle School introduced a new structure to our PAWS period in order to
incorporate enrichment activities twice a week. Beginning second quarter,
students will participate in one enrichment activity of their choice on Mondays
and Tuesdays. PAWS, a time for students to read, make-up assignments, receive
additional support from teachers, work on group projects, study, and visit the
library, will continue on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
This past
Monday, students learned about enrichment activities during their PAWS period.
A presentation informed students about enrichment and the next steps for
selecting their top 5 enrichment activities. After viewing Monday’s
presentation, students had one week to submit a google form with their ranked
top 5 enrichment activities. Students are not guaranteed their top choice, but
we will guarantee one of their top 5! If students do not get their first
choice, they will have an opportunity to select another activity for third
quarter. The last day to sign up for enrichment activities will be Monday,
October 23rd.
The student
google form, student presentation, and list of enrichment activities with
descriptions are available through Blackboard and the Kilmer Middle School
website under the Student tab. Each grade level has a different list of
activities. Students will learn what their assigned enrichment activity will be
on Wednesday, November 8th, the first day of second quarter. In SIS ParentVue
and SIS StudentVue, a 10th period will be added to each students’ schedule.
This 10th period class is the enrichment activity that students will attend on
Mondays and Tuesdays beginning Monday, November 13th.
Fairfax County Youth Survey
Attention 8th Grade Parents / Guardians:
The Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board
of Supervisors are working together to administer the Fairfax County Youth Survey.
The results of this survey are published each year on http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/demogrph/youthpdf.htm
and are used by school officials, youth leadership classes, youth serving county
agencies, and local non-profits to determine the effectiveness of prevention
and intervention programs offered in schools and communities. It is also used
to identify changing trends and areas of need. The survey is anonymous and no
individual information is reported. The survey will be given to 8th
grade middle school students during English class.
The Fairfax County Youth Survey asks questions about risky
behavior, mental health, physical health and safety. There are questions about
behaviors related to alcohol, illegal drugs, and misuse of prescription drugs.
Additional questions about depression, student stress, bullying, and
harassment, and questions about personal health, including eating disorders,
obesity, and for students in eighth, tenth, and twelfth grade only, sexual
behavior, will be included in the survey. Students are also asked about
specific protective factors concerning health and safety. A modified survey has
been created for students who may have special education needs or limited
English proficiency, to ensure that their voices can also be heard.
You have the right to preview the survey and may deny
permission for your child to participate if you desire. If a student is
uncomfortable with any question on the survey, the student does not have to
answer that question or may elect to discontinue the survey. While it is hoped
that as many students as possible will participate, you have the option of
completing the attached form if you wish to opt out your child.
The survey will be administered on November 9, 2017.
A copy of the actual survey, as well as the survey fact sheet, will be
available to parents and/or guardians and community members online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/youth-survey
and in the school counseling office of your child's school. Translated
documents are also available.
If you do not wish for your child to take part in the
survey, please complete the opt-out form and return it to your child's school
counselor no later than November 6, 2017:

If you have questions about the survey, contact Stefan
Mascoll, coordinator, Student Safety and Wellness Office, at 571-423-4270.

students to learn and develop effective work habits to promote academic success
From the Afterschool Desk:
There are two blocks after school,
2:25-3:30pm and 3:45-4:45pm. Students do not have to stay for the second
block and may walk or be picked up at 3:30pm. Students may not leave and return
for second block activities; they must stay. Students
should bring a snack from home, they may also purchase snack from the vending
machine or during lunch. Activities and Club descriptions are being
added/updated to the Afterschool Activities Calendar at http://www.fcps.edu/KilmerMS/activities/afterschool.html.

Program Specialist Ms. Kardelis at kckardelis@fcps.edu
or 703.846.8820.

and stops for late buses are different from regular route numbers and stops.
Late bus schedules are posted in Blackboard Parent View and
students can ask for help at the Main Office to identify their late bus route
number and stop. Students may only ride their assigned late bus. A parent can
help by ensuring that his/her child knows which late bus to ride to avoid
confusion in the afternoon.
Parent Pick-Up: A parent picking up a child should meet
him/her at Door 1. If a parent needs to pick-up a child before the end of
after-school activities, please park and come to the Main Office.
