Good afternoon, Laurel Hill Parents & Guardians!
We hope you enjoyed the long weekend with your family. October is now in full swing, bringing lots of exciting learning adventures and special events. These next two weeks alone, we have kindergarten “iReady” universal screening, second grade CogAT testing (one of the two standardized tests used in the screening for Advanced Academic Program placement), a schoolwide barbecue lunch catered by FCPS Food Services, a PTA-sponsored Teacher Lunch, visits from the fire department for Fire Prevention Week and from the GMU Geometry Lab for fourth grade math, and a kindergarten field trip. Plus, tonight – Wednesday, October 11 – at 6:30 p.m. our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Mrs. Clatterbuck, will hold a program information meeting for all parents interested in learning more about the Advanced Academic Program. You can find out more about these schoolwide events in the articles below. Please see class newsletters for information about grade-specific events, or contact your child’s teacher.
We are more than halfway through the first grading quarter, which ends officially on November 3. Teachers will hold one-on-one conferences with all parents/guardians at or near the end of this quarter. If you have not yet scheduled a time to meet with your child’s teacher, please contact him or her soon to choose a date. This meeting is an important step in helping your child succeed in school.
Have a great week!

Laurel Hill Art Teacher to Participate in 10th Annual Artist Teacher Exhibition
Congratulations to art teacher Ashley Birkmaier, who was recently selected to participate in the 10th annual Artist Teacher Exhibition, sponsored by FCPS. The artworks will be on display in the McGuire Woods Gallery at the nearby Lorton Workhouse Art Center until October 28. A reception to honor the artists will be held this Saturday, October 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. All Laurel Hill families are invited to visit the gallery and view Ms. Birkmaier’s masterpieces.

Parent-Teacher Conference Days Coming November 6 and 7; Early Dismissal on November 3!
It's still early in October, but it’s never too early to make note of upcoming schedule changes later in the fall.
The end of the first grading period is Friday, November 3. That day, students will be released two hours early at 2:05 p.m. so that teachers can get a jump on completing grades and other end-of-quarter paperwork. The following Monday and Tuesday – November 6 and 7 – are full Teacher Work Days, and students DO NOT REPORT. The office and SACC will be open.
