Wednesday, October 11
Wednesday, October 11,
2017 is the PSAT test date for grades 9-11, and Political Candidates Day for
grade 12.
When students arrive
to school, they will report to their 4th period teacher's class to learn their
location for the day. All students should report to 4th period at 8:10.
-
Students in grade 9 will take the PSAT 8/9, and
will be testing in classrooms with other 9th graders. They
should bring a pencil (not mechanical!) and a calculator.
-
Students in grade 10 or 11 will take the PSAT. They
should bring a pencil (not mechanical!) and a calculator. 10th
graders were automatically registered for the test; 11th graders had to
submit registration by last week.
- 11th graders who registered for
the test will be in a testing location with other 11th graders.
- Students who did not register
can still take the test but will not have the test scored. They will
be sent to the library to get their testing location after 4th
period.
-
Students in grade 12 should report to their 4th
period teacher and will then move to the auditorium for Candidate's Day.
PSAT
and PSAT 8/9 for grades 9 – 11
All freshmen,
sophomores, and juniors in attendance will be tested. Our freshman
students will take the PSAT 8/9 while our sophomores and juniors will be
administered the PSAT. Freshmen and sophomores will have their tests
scored and results shared; juniors who paid the fee will also have their tests
scored and receive results. Juniors who did not pay the fee and submit the form
will not be able to have their tests scored.
Information for All Students Testing
We will have an abbreviated
schedule on Wednesday, October 11. All students will be
released at 12:55 pm; buses will depart Oakton at 1:05 pm. If you have a
student testing with extended time, you will be responsible to make
arrangements for pick-up, and should have received an email yesterday with
that information.
The PSAT 8/9 is an
introduction to tests like the PSAT and SAT. It is intended to give students
the experience of being in a testing environment and give results that can help
students and families prepare for the PSAT and SAT in the coming years.
Preparation
materials for the PSAT 8/9 can be found on the
College Board website.
Preparation
materials for the PSAT can be found on the
College Board’s website.
If you have any
questions, contact Sal Olivo at sdolivo@fcps.edu.
More
information about the PSAT is available on our
website!
Political
Candidates Day for seniors
Every year Oakton’s
Government Teachers invite all of the candidates who are on the ballot for the
upcoming election to participate in a town hall style forum. This year’s forum
will occur from 8:25 – 12:30 next Wednesday, at the same time the underclassmen
are taking the PSAT and PSAT 8/9. School will be released
at 12:55.
Homecoming Week!
Homecoming week is October 10 – 13! Full
information is on our
website, but here are some highlights:
Guest passes for the dance are available in
the Gold and Activities Offices. They must be completed and turned in at
the time you buy your tickets. Tickets are $25 and go on sale the week of
Homecoming during all lunches. The Homecoming Dance “Glo-Co” will happen
on Saturday, October 14th from 8:00 – 11:00.
Each day leading up to the football game
against Westfield will be themed to help unite and celebrate Oakton’s school
spirit. Tuesday is Tacky Tourist Day, Wednesday is Groutfit Day, Thursday
is Denim Day, and Friday is Neon Day. There will be a faculty and student
tailgate Friday night starting at 5:30. The football game is a “White
Out” and there will be a Colored-Powder party at 6:00 on the lower field so
wear your white to the tailgate to get some neon colored powder to celebrate
the “Glo-Co” theme.
2nd
Annual Digital Citizenship Expo
Join parents from the
Oakton Pyramid to discuss digital citizen topics such as Digital Drama and
Sexting. Some sessions will include student panels who will share their
experiences with the topic and to answer parent questions. There will be two
sessions with a selection of topics to choose from; more information about the
sessions can be found on the flyer.
If you are interested
in coming, please take a moment to fill out this parent interest form and share what school
your child attends and the topic(s) in which you are interested so there will
be enough resources for all. Child care will be provided for children ages 5-12
years old.
The schools in the Oakton Pyramid are Crossfield
Elementary, Mosby Woods Elementary, Navy Elementary, Oakton Elementary, Waples
Mill Elementary, Rachel Carson Middle School, and Oakton High School. Also

school marching bands from throughout the Northern Virginia area and beyond

This workshop, conducted by a crime
prevention officer from the local police station, is designed to address both
the mental and physical aspects of self-defense.
Part one is an information sharing which covers the mindset of self-defense to
help avoid threats/dangerous situations. Topics include: situational awareness,
personal protection “tools” and safety considerations at home and when in
public.
Part two is instruction on techniques which can be used if you must physically
defend yourself. The focus of these techniques is to stun and run from a threat

Governor's School Interest Meeting
Interested students can attend an
informational meeting on Wednesday, October 18th in the Lecture Hall during
Cougar Time from 10:36 - 11:16.
What is Governor’s School? Governor's School is an academically challenging
program for sophomores and juniors, who excel in academic disciplines and the
arts, and want to be challenged beyond the regular school experience. Programs
are offered during the summer at Virginia colleges for 4 weeks.
Who should apply? This program is open to 10th and 11th graders only. Students
who apply should have at least a 3.8 GPA or better (for Academic Governor’s
School), have the emotional maturity and self-discipline to live away from
home, be available late June through July, and rank above the 90th% in
standardized testing. The selection process is run at the county and state
levels and is highly selective.
PTSA Funding
FUNDING IS GOING TO SUFFER
The PTSA's ability to fund programming
for the entire school is at risk. As of today, we have collected less than 50%
of our fundraising goal of $18,000.
What is at risk? Funding for: student groups, teacher grants, mental health
programming, SOL and AP snacks, students-in-need, and more. With increased
numbers of students and staff, our budget is being stretched very thin.
Please consider making a donation -- PTSA Membership is not required.
You may donate online here.
Or, checks made payable to OHS PTSA can be mailed to the school:
