WTW PTSO WeMail for the Week Beginning October 10, 2017, Issue No. 7

The PTSO Meeting is TONIGHT, Tuesday, October 10. Join Us and Welcome our New Principal, Dr. Carlyn Floyd

Parents, teachers, and students are invited. We try to share as much information as possible through the WeMail, but there is no substitute for face-to-face discussions and opportunities to ask questions. Key committee members attend as well as Principal Floyd, and it’s a great opportunity to learn more about special programs and other opportunities.

We look forward to seeing many of you tonight!

Order Your Student Directory

PTSO Student/Staff Directories will be available shortly after the student/family data is released from the front office in October. To ensure that we don’t underestimate or overestimate the number of directories we need to print, the PTSO is encouraging all families to pre-purchase your copy.

Join the PTSO and order a student directory.

Order a student directory only.

Sports Highlights

Precisionette Dance Team

The Precisionettes participated in the Walk Off Parkinson's walk and fundraiser on Sept. 24, at National's Park. The walk is family-friendly event to support those in the community affected by Parkinson's disease. It also includes educational resources for those who are looking for more information on Parkinson's, including the opportunity to talk with specialists in the area. It was a great opportunity for the girls to make an impact in the community and support this worthy cause. Click here to see pictures from the event. And check out the Walk off Parkinson's home page to see our very own Senior Precisionette Kelly Ruffner featured.

Volleyball

On Tuesday 9/26, the Cavaliers took on Lake Braddock at home. Thanks to all the teachers who came out to cheer us on! The freshmen team split 2 very close games (25-23 and 22-25). The JV team stumbled against Lake Braddock in the first set, but roared back for a 25-14 victory in the second set. Varsity defeated Lake Braddock in a clean sweep. After falling behind in the first few points, they turned the setback into a comeback and won 25-20. They thundered through the second set 25-9!, and finished the third set decisively 25-16. Great start to conference play!

On Thursday 9/28, all 3 Woodson volleyball teams swept Annandale! JV quickly finished them 25-7 and 25-16. Varsity followed suit 25-11, 25-15, 25-12. Junior outside hitter Christine Metzler lit up the offense all night without a single hitting error. Amazing!

Two very challenging matches followed the week of October 2: Tuesday at home against West Springfield Freshmen won 2-0, JV split 1-1, and varsity had another clean sweep in close sets: 25-22, 27-25, and 25-17! Senior Libero and Captain Gabi Lyons went above and beyond digging up everything the opponents hit and serving up a storm! She kept the team focused, and they all played hard for every point.

Last Thursday, the Lady Cavs faced Robinson and put up a valiant effort, but victory was elusive. JV took them into extra points, losing 16-18 in the third set, and varsity hung in for 5 spirited sets. Can't wait for the rematch when they come to Woodson for senior night later this month.

This week there are 2 HOME VOLLEYBALL GAMES! Tuesday is Dig Pink Night to support breast cancer research with a huge bake sale at our game against cross-town rival Fairfax HS. Thursday we face South County. Come out to cheer both nights!

Varsity Field Hockey

This week the Lady Cavaliers Varsity Field Hockey team travelled to West Springfield and hosted Robinson. The activity began early in the week as many no doubt noticed the painting of the Rock honoring this year’s seniors. On Friday, the procession of seniors and their families was enjoyed pre-game and was followed post-game with a cookie and milk bar. Many thanks to the coaches and parents for making this enjoyable and memorable evening happen. This year’s seniors include: Michaela Whearty, Georgia Rafter, Rachel Williams, Caroline Donnelly, Rachel Lansbury, Emma Hartzler, and Kat Roberts. Congratulations Seniors! All the best for your bright futures! Go Cavs!

Girls Cross Country

This past week, although most of the girls’ cross country team had a well-deserved week of rest, the varsity groups raced at a district meet at Burke Lake Park on Tuesday, October 3rd. Although they were saving some of their energy for their invitation this coming weekend, they still had an impressive showing. The top five scorers included Gracie Eidson, Jackie Willey, Naylle Pando, Paige Fowler, and Naomi DuCharme. Up Next for the team: 10/7 – Glory Days (JV) and Great American Invitational Cary, NC (Varsity).

Boys Cross Country

This past week, although most of the boys’ cross country team had a well-deserved week of rest, the varsity groups raced at a district meet at Burke Lake Park on Tuesday, October 3rd. Although they were saving some of their energy for their invitation this coming weekend, they still had an impressive showing. The top five scorers included Jack Leech, Aslan Abrishami-Azar, Robert Johnson, Abdi Hassan, and Alejandro Posadas-Nava. Up Next for the team: 10/7 – Glory Days (JV) and Great American Invitational Cary, NC (Varsity).

Woodson Athletic Boosters would like to thank its sponsors: Sun Design, Nicely Done Kitchens, Turnpike Basketball, MindWorks, Oh George Tables and Taphouse
