CES Family Bulletin #6

Dear CES Families,

We had a fun week of learning at CES. It was filled with small group math and language arts activities, science/STEAM experiments, field trips, Fun Runs, BBQs, book discussions, and morning meetings! All of this was done with a focus on the #otherpeoplematter mindset. Our students are doing such an amazing job with identifying potential in others. This is all possible because CES is always #focusingonourfuture!

If you have not turned in your child's Emergency Care Card, please do so as soon as possible. This information is critical and used often throughout the school year.

Last night we had three windows broken at our school. If you have any information regarding this vandalism please contact the FCPS @ 703-691-2131.

The staff of CES works extremely hard to ensure that your children are receiving an amazing education. We are starting a new online tradition at our school (CES Soaring Eagles) that gives the community the opportunity to say thank you and/or show appreciation for all of the effort the CES staff is putting in day and night! CES Soaring Eagles are compliments, kudos, etc. that we will  share with the staff on Mondays. What a great way to show your appreciation and to help start the CES Staff's week off in a positive direction! Please click HERE to share your CES Soaring Eagles!

Video: Attendance Matters

A student's attendance in school is extremely important and has a direct correlation with academic success. Did you know that chronic absenteeism (missing 18 or more school days per year) is a primary cause of lower academic achievement? Watch this video in which FCPS Superintendent Scott S. Brabrand talks about the importance of attending school every day.

We had a great CES BBQ as well on Thursday! The kids, staff, and a few parents enjoyed traditional BBQ food outside in the bus parking lot. Thank you to Energy Zone for providing us with this opportunity.

Last week our students focused on the trait of PERSPECTIVE. This strength comes on the heels of open-mindedness. The back-to-back nature of these strengths is by design, as open-mindedness and perspective are closely related and comprise the foundation of empathy.

Next week our students will continue to focus on the character trait of PERSPECTIVE.

CogAT Testing

During the fall, second grade students and third-six grade students new to FCPS will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT).  The purpose of the CogAT is to provide information about students' developed abilities in verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning. This test will be administered the week of October 10. The results from this test are just one of the criteria used for placement into the Advanced Academic program.  If you would like more information about the CogAT or the AAP program you may go to http://www.fcps.edu/is/aap/faqs.shtml.

School Bond Referendum to Be on November 7 Ballot

A school bond referendum will be on the general election ballot Tuesday, November 7. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Residents of Fairfax County may vote if they are 18 years or older on Election Day and have registered to vote 22 days prior to the election (by Monday, October 16, at 5 p.m.).

Bond sales, a form of long-term borrowing, are used to finance the building and renovation of schools and must be approved by voters since they are a future obligation for taxpayers. Schools from all areas of the county are included in the list of new construction, capacity enhancement, and renovation projects.
