Oakton High School is excited to present Dr. Bill Phillip, winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics "for development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light" (shared with Steven Chu and Claude Cohen-Tannoudji), on September 20, 2017 in the Lecture Hall. The presentation will initially be open to current and past physics students but depending upon the interest level we will open it up to other juniors and seniors.
The presentation will consist of two parts and students may sign up for one or both parts:
Part 1 - 12:00 - 1:00 pm - Time for you to meet and chat with Dr. Phillips
Part 2 - 1:00 - 2:30 pm - Presentation followed by a question and answer period.
To attend, students must sign up for the presentation by completing a Google form. The link for this form is available from their current science teacher. Students will be excused from class to attend the presentation but they will be responsible making up any missed work.
If you have any questions, please contact Susan Bingham (sdbingham@fcps.edu)

Deloitte Mentor Program

Deloitte, a professional services firm, has teamed up with Oakton High School and FCPS MentorWorks on a youth mentoring program. It starts in October and runs throughout the school year. Students accepted to this program are paired with a mentor who will help answer questions regarding life after high school and help guide them through this stressful phase.
If your student is a junior or a senior and is interested in joining the Deloitte Cougars Mentoring Program, please direct them to Mr. Janis (Systems of Support Advisor) in Room 219 or email him at jrjanis@fcps.edu to get more information and to apply for the mentoring program. Applications are also available in the gold office with Mrs. Burke. Applications are due on September 22, 2017. Spots are limited!

Shop/Volunteer at Whole Foods this Wednesday 9/20

On Wednesday, September 20, local Whole Foods stores in Vienna, Fair Lakes, Tysons, Reston, and Springfield will donate 5% of profits to the Fairfax County Council of PTAs. In addition, the stores will be collecting food for Food for Others Power Pack Program (P3). P3 distributes food to elementary school children who otherwise might go hungry on the weekends. Lastly, if you have 2 free hours on Wednesday, please consider working a shift at the PTA table at Whole Foods -- if we can cover 10 shifts, we will earn $500 for Oakton!! Here is the link to sign up. Thank you!

Yoga at Oct 4th PTSA Meeting

A SPECIAL TREAT JUST FOR YOU! We have arranged for a de-stressing, unwinding preview of the enhanced Yoga and Mindfulness program coming to Oakton HS this year with a Q&A session to kick off the October 4th PTSA meeting. It’s a perfect time for you to calm and rebalance, learn about this unique resource available to help your students thrive this school year, and maybe even gather some tools to help you survive the new year too. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, October 4 at 6:30 PM in the library. The business portion of our meeting will begin at 7 PM.
