CES Family Bulletin

Dear CES Families,

We had a very eventful week that ended with Baldy and the SCA and Patrol Officers walking in Centreville High School's Homecoming Parade. They did a wonderful job representing CES!

Lockdown Drill

We held our first Lockdown Drill of the year on Friday and your children did a brilliant job with this drill. We will have another lockdown drill on Thursday. In order to meet the requirements of the Amended Code of Virginia 22.1-137.2, lockdown drills must be conducted at least four times each school year. A lockdown requires that all students and staff remain in classrooms or other designated secure locations that are away from danger and that minimize access and visibility. During the drill, signs will be posted on the entrance doors indicating the school is in lockdown. No one will be allowed into the school at this time. Similar procedures would be followed in a real situation.

Supporting our Students' Math & Literacy Skills

At school we will be focusing on developing our students' math and literacy skills through fun and creative ways. Above you can see students working on a large outdoor number line and students engaged in a read aloud. At home, please have your student read or read to your student daily. For math, playing games at home that work on basic math skills will be incredibly beneficial. If you need some games or ideas please contact your teacher.

On Wednesday, we had our inaugural book bike tour! We traveled through the neighborhood delivering books and popsicles to students. Look for us in the future on your street!

We are off and running with the Positivity Project! Last week students learned about the Other People Matter Mindset. It is amazing to hear students talking in the hall about what they are learning. This week the character trait will be CURIOSITY. Please ask your students to share what they are learning through the Positivity Project. These can be great dinner or car conversations!

Arrival Time

Please remember that our building does not open until 8:55am. Students should not be arriving before then unless they are patrols or have a reason to be here early. Siblings of patrols or club members (Green Team, etc) should not be dropped off before the designated time. We are concerned about students standing outside longer than necessary, especially as the weather starts turning colder. Thank you for your cooperation.

Free and Reduced Meals

If your family would like to qualify for Free and Reduced Meals this year, you must fill out a new application. Eligibility is determined each year and last year’s eligibility expires on October 11, 2017. As of October 12th, lunches will begin to be charged to the student's account at the regular amount if you have not filled out an application for this year. Free and reduced price meals are available to students whose households qualify under federal standards.  Please visit the FCPS Food and Nutrition Services website, https://www.fcps.edu/node/31049, to access the form online.  If you wish to complete a traditional paper application, you can obtain a copy from our school office.  After you apply, you will be notified in writing of your child's status. If you qualify for Free and Reduced price meals this year, you can also choose to fill out the Consent to Share Information for Benefits of Other Programs.  You may be eligible to participate in other FCPS fee-based programs without paying a fee or by paying a reduced fee.
