WTW PTSO WeMail for the Week Beginning Sep 11, 2017, Issue No. 3

The first PTSO Meeting of the school year is Tuesday, September 12: TOMORROW. It’s Dr. Poole’s final meeting with us, so please plan to attend.

Parents, teachers, and students are invited our first monthly PTSO meeting Tuesday, September 12, at 7pm in the Woodson Library. We try to share as much information as possible through the WeMail, but there is no substitute for face-to-face discussions and opportunities to ask questions.

Key committee members attend as well, and it’s a great opportunity to learn more about special programs and other opportunities. This year, we asked the Dr. Poole to bring a different Assistant Principal with him to each meeting so that we can better understand the Woodson community. We’ll also be discussing the PTSO budget for the year. You do not have to be a member to attend the meeting, but if you’d like to join, we welcome you. Click here to join or for more information. We look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow tonight!

7. Mock ACT/SAT Exams- Saturday, October 28

The Mock SAT/Mock ACT is Saturday, October 28, from 7:30am-12noon in the Woodson Lecture Hall. The Score Report Review Session is Thursday, November 16, 7:00-8:30 PM in the Lecture Hall. Current Juniors should not miss this great opportunity, as they will begin actual SAT and ACT testing in the spring!

This year the Woodson PTSO is pleased once again to have Mindworks Educational Services host this year's Mock SAT and Mock ACT. All students must register in advance so that Mindworks has an accurate headcount. The cost is $15 when paid in advance OR $20 when paid on October 28.

To register click here.

You may pay in advance online here, mail your payment (checks made out to W.T. Woodson PTSO) to PTSO, WT Woodson High School, 9525 Main Street, Fairfax, VA 22031-4099, or bring your payment to Wednesday’s Back-to-School Night—PTSO folks will be in the cafeteria on from 5:30-6:15pm.

The PTSO “mock” exam program offers full-length ACT and SAT exams to help prepare Woodson students take these college entrance exams. Although the mock exams are full-length “real” tests, the scores are not official, not reported to The College Board/ACT or any college, and should not be confused with the official PSAT, ACT, and SAT exams offered throughout the school year.

Freshman and Sophomores are also welcome to take the Fall and Winter Mock Exams. FYI, the Winter Session Test date is Sat, Feb 10, 7:30am -12pm; the Winter Session Score Report Review is Thursday, March 1, 7:00-8:30 PM.

Check the PTSO website for full details.

8. Staff Self Care Initiative – Join the Team!

The PTSO, the Community of Solutions, and Heart & Soul Yoga partner to provide Staff & Teacher Self-Care Days at W. T. Woodson High School and we need your help!! The Self-Care Days are intended to provide just a few minutes of “nourishment” for our teachers who juggle many aspects of their lives as they play a very important role in making the world a better place for our children. Teachers enter a space for a few minutes of yoga, mindfulness, massage and healthy tips, “tastes” or tea. This brief escape is one way that we support Woodson’s Cav Culture of being: Proactive / Accountable / Empathetic / Respectful / Connected. We schedule these days 4-6 times each school year during the 2-hour student lunch period.

How can you support this initiative?

  • Volunteer to “host” one of the self-care days. This is super simple; all that is required is for you to be available to welcome the staff as they arrive and guide them to the different options for that day (yoga, mindfulness, chair yoga etc.). This is a 2 ½ hour commitment for each self-care day (generally 10:45 – 1:20pm).
  • Volunteer to help contact healthy food vendors and invite them to join the self-care initiative.
  • If you know of any health-related businesses (yoga, massage, acupuncture, tai chi, etc.) or healthy food businesses that might want to join, please let us know and we will reach out to them directly.

If you are interested in volunteering please contact: Mary Beth Quick, mbquick@heartandsoulyogava.com.
