Meet the Admin Team
South
Lakes is pleased to welcome Ms. Lisa Taweel as the newest member of our
administrative team, supervising special education. Other members of our core administrative team
include:

Starting
September 1st we welcome Mr. Pete Bendorf to the team. He will help
cover while Mr. Luongo is on paternity leave until mid-October. Mr. Bendorf recently retired from FCPS
and was last an administrator at Westfield HS. Once we have email set up for
him we will be sure the website is updated.

Transportation
- The
Kiss & Ride is located on the stadium side of the building. Parent should not
drop off students in the staff lot or along Seahawk Drive.
- Students
who were notified they are eligible for a parking pass should pick it up by the
end of the day on Friday. All student drivers should park in their assigned
spots. Parking enforcement will being Tuesday, Sept. 5th.
- Local neighborhoods are increasing their parking enforcement efforts. Students who park in unauthorized areas risk being towed.
- For students
who ride their bike to school there is a bike rack outside of door 4.
- Late
buses will run on Wednesdays starting Sept. 13th. Students who stay after for school related
clubs and activities are eligible to ride the late bus. They must get a pass
from the teacher or club sponsor they stay with. Students who leave campus and come back or
those who do not have a pass will not be permitted on the late bus.

portal for many school fees. Parents can
set up an account which they link their student(s) to so there is one account per
family. Course fees, lunch funds, some
ticket events can be taken care of online. MySchoolBucks eliminates the need
for students to carry cash to school and for multiple checks to be written.

Yearbook
Pictures- Sept. 11th & 12th
Grades
9-11: Pictures will be taken during
English classes on Monday, Sept. 11 (green) and Tuesday, Sept. 12 (blue).
Seminars on 9/11 are 1 and 2, so students in 2nd period English
classes MAY have pictures scheduled on 9/11. Picture order forms will be sent
home soon.
Seniors: Must be sure their photos
are taken BEFORE Thanksgiving. Any photos taken after Thanksgiving have no
guarantee of being printed in the yearbook. Seniors/parents of seniors should
contact the Lifetouch senior hotline at 1-800-445-1189 if they haven’t had
pictures taken yet. There will be one more round of makeups in October.

Request to take a
Course Pass/Fail:
With parent/guardian approval, high
school students are given the option of taking one elective credit per school
year to be marked on a pass-fail basis. This may be applied to required
physical education credits, world language credits, economics and personal
finance and to credits other than those required for English, social studies,
mathematics, and laboratory science. Information regarding the Pass/Fail
policy can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/grading-and-reporting/secondary/grading-scale. Students should contact their
counselor to discuss the Pass/Fail option. The request for Pass/Fail
status for a full year course must be submitted to the student’s school
counselor by Thursday, September 28th.
Expunging of HS Credit
Courses taken in middle school (9th graders only)
In accordance with Virginia state
regulations, FCPS Regulation 2408 permits parents of students who take a high
school credit-bearing course in middle school to request that the grade be
omitted from the student's high school transcript and the student not earn high
school credit for the course. Guidelines and the procedures for expunging
grades for high school courses taken in middle school, including the required
form, can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/grading-and-reporting/secondary/taking-high-school-courses-in-middle-school.
Parents/Guardians must make this
request no later than the end of the first nine weeks of the school year
following completion of the course. The deadline for 9th grade requests
to expunge a high school credit-bearing course from 8th grade is Friday,
October 27, 2017,

Block Party- September 1st from 4:00 – 6:30PM, Stadium Lot
Please come by and check out the Block Party this Friday. Many clubs and organizations will be conducting fundraisers, sponsoring games and Boosters will be selling spirit wear. Learn about opportunities to get involved in the Seahawk Community! There is no admission fee to get in.
SLHS Parent
Orientation - Tuesday, Sept. 5th from 6:30-8:30
Please join us for a glimpse of life
at SLHS. This opportunity is for both new and returning parents. Sessions
offered that night include: nuts and bolts, a teacher panel, overview of
advanced academics, how to get help, overview of diploma requirements, and tips
for handling social media and athletics and activities. In addition, you
can get help with setting up ParentVue and MySchoolBucks and as well as learn
more about booster and parent groups, including stocking up on Seahawk wear!
Babysitting: Spanish Honor Society students
will provide activities for children over age 5 during the program.

Senior Parent Night-
Thursday, Sept. 7th at 6:30PM
This is an annual event where
parents and senior students can come to gain a wealth of
information. Counselors will be making a short presentation on the
College Application process at South Lakes High School that was presented to
our senior students earlier that day. Our new Career Center Specialist
(Jennifer Campbell) will be speaking regarding the Career Center. Monica
Gomez, the Pathways Program Counselor at Northern Virginia Community College
will be in attendance and speaking regarding the Pathways program and what it
could mean for students not yet ready for the move to a four-year
college/university or looking for other post-secondary options. Finally,
Mr. Barry Bradberry, the Associate Dean of Admission at Elon University will be
our featured speaker. Barry has spoken for many years at our program,
provides a wealth of knowledge on the admissions process and will answer any
questions you may have. Barry will be speaking regarding the college
admission process in general and not speaking specifically regarding Elon
University. Please plan on joining us Thursday evening, September 7th at 6:30
for an information filled evening.
SLHS Back To School
Night- Tuesday, Sept. 12th
Our BTSN is on TUESDAY, Sept. 12th
from 6:00- 9:30PM. . The agenda for the night is as follows:
- 5:45 – 6:30 Get information form school
affiliated groups, buy spirit wear, booster passes, assistance with
parentvue and more
- 6:30- 6:50 Meet the administrative team and get
an overview of the year
- 7:00 Visit classes: parents will rotate through
their child’s blue day schedule followed by their green day.
Once again we will provide shuttle
buses from area elementary schools to help alleviate parking issues. Shuttles
will make stops at Fox Mill, Dogwood, Hunters Woods, Forest Edge and Lake Anne
