1. RCMS 8th Grade Back To School Night, Thursday, September 7: We are looking forward to welcoming parents and guardians of RCMS eighth grade students at Back To School Night on Thursday from 7:00 pm to 8:45 pm. Parents should report to their child’s first period class where they will view a short welcome on the TV by our administration. Parents and guardians will then have an opportunity to follow your student’s schedule, meet teachers and counselors and learn more about the upcoming school year.

For everyone's safety, please walk on the sidewalks to keep the driveway clear for cars and our shuttle bus.

FLE Preview 6:15 in the Library: There will be a preview/information session starting at 6:15PM for our Family, Life Education units.  Physical Education teachers will be on hand in the library to discuss the instructional units, how you may opt out of any portions of the program and answer any questions you may have.

Parking Shuttle: Parking is provided at Carson, Nysmith or at Open Door Presbyterian Church, 3001 Centreville Road Herndon, VA. Please do not park in the fields at Carson, as this will damage our underground irrigation systems.  RCMS will have an FCPS Shuttle bus running on Back to School Night. It will begin running at 6:30pm from our overflow parking location at Open Door Presbyterian Church. The shuttle will run until 7:15 and then begin again at 8:30 until approximately 30 minutes after BTSN has ended to assist parent in getting to their cars.

Food Trucks for Back to School Nights:  Our PTA has arranged to have a Food Truck at the upcoming Back to School Nights.  Parents who are attending BTSN are invited to take advantage of these food truck offerings.  The cafeteria will be open for seating, where you can also view the School Board message while you dine.

September 7 - 8th grade BTSN: Bacon and Ed’s Gourmet Kitchen food truck will be serving Shaved Ribeye Sandwiches, Fried Chicken Banh Mi Sandwiches, Tacos, Fries, Churros, and much, much more!

2. TJHSST Information Meeting: TJHSST is an FCPS regional governor’s high school (grades 9-12) for students interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).  An informational meeting will be held at RCMS on Wednesday, September 13, 3:00-4:00PM.  Come learn about the programs, classes offered and student life. Also get detailed information about Admissions and Application for 8th grade students.  Please note that this meeting is only for 8th grade parents and students. Students may stay afterschool if parents are coming to the presentation at 3:00.

3. Upcoming NJHS Service Hour Opportunities – 8th Grade Back to School Night (Thursday 9/7)

Back to School Night Bake Sale: 8th grade NJHS members may earn one service hour for baking and bringing in 2 dozen items. Items must be individually wrapped and cannot contain nuts. Students should bring their treats to B127 on the morning of the bake sale in disposable containers/bags. Each student may only sign up for ONE SLOT (each sign up slot represents 24 items).

Back to School Night Guides: We need 8th grade NJHS members to help guide parents and work the bake sale during the 8th grade Back to School Night! Students should wear a white dress shirt and black long pants or skirt, and must report to Ms. Joyce’s room (B107) no later than 5:30pm. Students will earn three service hours for this opportunity.

4. BYOD--Bring Your Own Device:  We encourage students to bring a personal device such as a laptop, a tablet or phone for use during the instructional day. Our teachers integrate the use of technology into their instruction every day. All devices should be setup to use the free wifi FCPSOnboard. Directions for setting up the wifi on personal devices can be found on the Rachel Carson public website, search BYOD. Fairfax County Public Schools has developed relationships with various vendors to offer discounts of software and hardware. Go to Technology@Home to learn more.

Students should be aware of the NO USE ZONES throughout the building and remember that use of your personal device should be used in school with teacher direction in the classroom.
