The beginning of the school year is
an excellent time to collect data in preparation for discussions at annual individualized
education plan (IEP) meetings regarding extended school year (ESY) services. Determining
if a student requires more than 6-8 weeks to recoup skills and knowledge lost
over summer break is one factor which can be considered when discussing the
need for ESY. Additionally, long weekends and holidays are other great
opportunities to collect data.

Mandt Academy begins
September 19, 2017, at Willow Oaks and October 4, 2017, at Virginia Hills. These
trainings provide participants with prevention, pre-crisis, crisis management,
and de-escalation intervention strategies. The Mandt System is a
systematic training program that builds on skill development through a process
of gradual and graded alternatives for de-escalating and assisting students
using a combination of interpersonal communication skills, conflict resolution
strategies, and physical interaction techniques. The goal of the Mandt
System is to minimize the potential for verbal and physical aggression through
proactive approaches to problematic behavior. Participants gain a
fundamental understanding of the crisis cycle, strategies to respond with the
least amount of external management necessary in all situations, and the skills
that allow safe and respectful intervention when needed. To register,
please login to MyPLT and search for course #AC-1547. For more
information, please call Behavior Intervention Services at
