  • The FCPS Parent Resource Center (PRC) provides resources, information, and consultations to support the success of all students, including those with learning challenges, special needs, and disabilities. Confidential meetings, training opportunities, an extensive lending library, and a year-long calendar of workshops are offered for parents, educators, and community members through collaboration with staff members from FCPS offices as well as local and national experts.   • Join us for An Introduction to Executive Function, on Friday, September 8, 2017, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Dunn Loring Center for Parent Services, Entrance 1, Room 100. The brain’s executive function enables people to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and multi-task successfully. Learn how most executive function skills fall into seven different categories. Acquiring these skills requires the ability to think critically about thoughts, behaviors, and actions.  Learn how these skills affect your child’s academic habits.   
  • The Exceptional Military Families Summit will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2017, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mount Vernon High School, 8515 Old Mt. Vernon Road, Entrance #4, Alexandria, VA. Don’t miss this day of resources and information for military families of children with special needs. Presentations will include: Special Education Services, Special Education Procedural Support, School Counseling Services, Virginia Assessments, Diploma Options, and Career and Transition Services. Exhibitors will include Military Organizations, Fairfax County Public Schools and more!   
  • Homework Made Simple will be presented on Friday, September 29, 2017, from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Dunn Loring Center for Parent Services, Entrance 1, Room 100. Presented by Ann Dolin, M.Ed., author of the award winning book, Homework Made Simple: Tips, Tools and Solutions for Stress-Free Homework and Director of Educational Connections, Inc. This workshop will provide parents with tips, tools, and practical strategies to make this a year of stress-free homework for your child!  
  • Autism speaks transition workshop: will be held on Saturday, September 16th, 2017, at the Tysons Corner Marriott from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A resource fair, keynote, and four breakout sessions focused on different aspects of the transition planning process. Fairfax County Public Schools Career and Transition Services will present on the Transition IEP process.   
  • Fairfax/Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) information session: will be held on Tuesday, September 19th, 2017, at the Fairfax County Government Center, Conference Room 7 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. A general overview information will be provided by representatives from the Fairfax County CSB on eligibility and postsecondary services.  


      Especially for Staff Members

      • Mind in the Making: The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs will be offered to educators beginning on October 4 through November 15, 2017. Learn strategies and supports to use in your classroom now! All sessions will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. at the Dunn Loring Center for Parent Services, Entrance 1, Room 100. Attend all 4 sessions to receive 10 recertification points. Attend all 4 sessions and complete journal reflections to receive 15 recertification points. Register on MyPLT with course #: PL20171011. 
      • The beginning of the school year is an excellent time to collect data in preparation for discussions at annual individualized education plan (IEP) meetings regarding extended school year (ESY) services. Determining if a student requires more than 6-8 weeks to recoup skills and knowledge lost over summer break is one factor which can be considered when discussing the need for ESY. Additionally, long weekends and holidays are other great opportunities to collect data.   
      • Mandt Academy begins September 19, 2017, at Willow Oaks and October 4, 2017, at Virginia Hills. These trainings provide participants with prevention, pre-crisis, crisis management, and de-escalation intervention strategies. The Mandt System is a systematic training program that builds on skill development through a process of gradual and graded alternatives for de-escalating and assisting students using a combination of interpersonal communication skills, conflict resolution strategies, and physical interaction techniques. The goal of the Mandt System is to minimize the potential for verbal and physical aggression through proactive approaches to problematic behavior. Participants gain a fundamental understanding of the crisis cycle, strategies to respond with the least amount of external management necessary in all situations, and the skills that allow safe and respectful intervention when needed. To register, please login to MyPLT and search for course #AC-1547. For more information, please call Behavior Intervention Services at 571-423-4106.      
      • Virtual Very Important Paraprofessionals (VIP) The Department of Special Services (DSS) will be offering a Virtual VIP Conference, on September 22, 2017. All information for the Virtual VIP Conference will be provided through the VIP Conference website: http://fcpsnet.fcps.edu/ssse/vip All paraprofessionals (instructional assistants, PHTAs, PHAs, ABA assistants, and kindergarten assistants), will be able to self-select online professional learning modules for paraprofessionals who support students accessing general education K-12 (CAT A), paraprofessionals who support students accessing adapted curriculum K-12 (CAT B), paraprofessionals who support students in an enhanced autism classroom or preschool autism classroom (EAC & PAC), and paraprofessionals who support students in early childhood special education (ECSE). In addition, a module, “So, You Want to Be a Teacher?” will provide information for any paraprofessional who wishes to become a teacher in the future. Schools can support their paraprofessionals by assigning a school facilitator for the virtual training. A facilitator guide will be included within each of the online training modules to support schools with facilitation. Further information will be provided on the website for facilitators.       • Best Practices for Educating Students with High Functioning Autism the Office of Special Education Instruction is offering this one-credit Academy course for all educators working with high-functioning students on the autism spectrum. The course of study includes an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder (High-Functioning Autism) including characteristics, academic and instructional supports, social skills instruction, and behavior management. This course supports: (1) Create a Student-Centered Learning Environment, (2) Plan and Teach for Student Learning, (3) Assess Student Learning, as defined in the FCPS Best Practices for Teaching and Learning Framework. This course is open to educators serving students pre-kindergarten through grade 12 and will take place beginning on October 2, 2017, from 4:45-7:45 p.m. in the Centreville ES cafeteria.       • 1-2-3 Magic and Positive Behavior Support This course is designed to teach preschool and elementary staff members to design positive behavior supports including specific Tier 1, 2, and 3 interventions. Background information and literature is reviewed and practical techniques are shared and practiced. Participants learn to use the 1-2-3 Magic Program and other behavior management strategies and interventions. This course supports: Create a Student-Centered Learning Environment as defined in the FCPS Best Practices for Teaching and Learning Framework, and will take place beginning on October 16, 2017, from 4:45-7:45 p.m. at the Gatehouse Administration Center.       • On September 18 and 19, 2017, the Office of Special Education Instruction (OSEI) Adapted Curriculum in conjunction with Career and Transition Services shall be offering trainings for secondary teachers on Community Based Instruction and Community Work Experience.
