Glasgow Community -
Welcome to the new and improved Glasgow Gazette. My goal is to send out a weekly newsletter every Sunday from now until the end of the 2017-18 school year to keep you posted on what's happening at our amazing school.
Over the last few weeks, I have been able to spend quality time with my family in Ohio jet skiing and swimming in Lake Erie and riding roller coasters at Cedar Point. In addition, I attended the National Principals Conference in Philadelphia learning more about how to improve, both individually and as a school.
There has been a number of exciting things happening in the building over the past few weeks and we are looking forward to more students (and parents) attending one of our many programs designed to support our students this upcoming school year. On July 10, we welcomed over 50 Young Scholar students to our summer program taught by Nicole Bevenour, Raquel Velasquez and Lauren Quigg. Special thanks to Steven McFarlane, our new Dean of Students for leading this program this year. On Friday, July 14, Carmon Golden, Director of Student Services, hosted a New Student Parent Coffee to assist parents with the transition to Glasgow. We will be hosting another Parent Coffee on Tuesday, August 1 from 8-10am.
We also had almost 50 students sign up for our Algebra Boot Camp taught by Hannah Kim and Emily McCloud from J.E.B. Stuart High School, which will begin on July 24. Finally, we are looking forward to hosting over 160 6th grade students at our FREE Jump Start program for rising 6th graders. The Jump Start Program will be taught by Glasgow teachers Danielle Plourde, Pilar Zamora, Nicole Bevenour, Sarah Boomer and Megan McLain. The goal of the program is to alleviate any anxiety and concerns students may have about attending a new school and get them excited about the opportunities that await them at Glasgow Middle School. If you have not signed up your student yet, visit the following link: https://goo.gl/forms/GLk9PszgbQ8veQY22. If you have any questions, please contact Steve McFarlane at swmcfarlane@fcps.edu.
I am looking forward to seeing your student(s) soon. Enjoy the time with your child(ren) over the summer and as always, please let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Shawn DeRose, Principal

 Meet the Glasgow Staff
Since my arrival at Glasgow, we have focused on developing leaders in our building. Over the past two years, at least one member of our admin team has been promoted. That tradition continues as Melanie Porter, one of our Deans of Students, recently accepted a Assistant Principal position at Frost Middle School. We wish her all the best as she transitions to her new position.
With Melanie’s departure, I am pleased to announce Steven McFarlane as our new Dean of Students. Steven joins us most recently from the International Academy at T.C. Williams and he brings a wide breadth of instructional knowledge, both in content and in meeting the needs of English language learners. Prior to moving to Northern Virginia, he served as an administrator and teacher in Utah and California. Please join me in welcoming Steven to the Glasgow community.

Article of the Week
As I mentioned earlier, I spent a few weeks in Ohio riding roller coasters at Cedar Point, the Roller Coaster Capital of the World (https://www.cedarpoint.com). Below is an article about the benefits of spending time with your child(ren) at an amusement park.

Important Immunization Requirement - Incoming 6th Grade Students
Sixth grade students cannot begin school in September without documentation of having had the Tdap booster. Parents or guardians should ask their private health care provider, or the health department, to review their child’s immunization record if they are unsure if their child has received the Tdap booster. A signed and dated immunization record from the physician stating that your child has received this immunization will be required. You may send in your documentation now to your school's registrar, to ensure that he or she meets this requirement before the first day of school in the fall.
Students can receive immunizations required for school at any Fairfax County Health Department immunization clinic. Information about health department clinic locations and hours can be found at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/hd/hdclinicsite.htm.
