Wolverine Community,
Participation in high school sports is incredibly
valuable for kids, particularly first-year students. High school sports encourage positive
behavior, teaching the values of teamwork, discipline, and responsibility. This translates into better academic performance;
student-athletes do better than their peers in their high school classes and
are more likely to go to, stick with, and complete college. It also makes better citizens- student
athletes eventually vote more often, are more likely to participate in their
communities, and engage in more public service than their peers. Student-athletes are also less likely to
abuse drugs, drop out, or engage in criminality.
Did you know? Public school athletics are funded largely by
parents, boosters, fans and students with Fairfax County Public Schools paying
only approximately 20% of the true operating costs of athletic activities at
West Potomac. We rely heavily upon
fundraising, gate proceeds, and donations for uniforms, equipment, field/court
maintenance, and routine supplies.
The
Wolverine Athletic Booster Club (WABC) leads this effort—and
we need your help! We’re a 100% volunteer organization made up
of parents, coaches, administrative staff, and community leaders who give their
time and talents. WABC receives no financial support from the school
system. We raise funds and support all
of the West Potomac teams in all sorts of ways, such as selling tickets and
concessions at games, funding “spirit” buses for students and fans to travel to
state tournaments, organizing pep rallies (first one is August 22, 6pm) and awards banquets, and selling mulch
and Christmas trees to the West Potomac community.
If your family becomes a member of WABC, not
only are you supporting West Potomac Sports financially, but you also get in free to all regular season home games
in every sport! Some are surprised to
learn this fact but everyone must either have a booster pass or pay the $5
entry fee per public high school game.
The Silver Booster pass covers four people, which means it is worth
$3,760 (4 tickets to 188 games). Silver
passes are normally $175 but are only $155
until September 1st. You
can order your passes right now at www.westpotomacsports.org (“WABC Online Registration”).
Please consider joining WABC, even if your
student decides not to participate in any sports. Whether you are just curious or have a
specific idea for improving the sporting experience for all players and fans,
all are welcome to join us at our monthly meetings inside the WPHS library at
7:00 pm on the second Wednesday of every
month. Parents of first-year
students, bursting as they are with enthusiasm and questions, are especially
welcome.
Finally, High School Sports, while
entertaining, are not “pure spectator sports.”
Every team has varying game support needs, but it takes between 4 and 7
parents to volunteer for every game.
Every sport has a team representative to serve as the liaison
between WABC and the team/coach. These
people also assist the coach in the coordination of ticket sales, team dinners,
etc. Every team rep needs assistance from
the other parents. Please consider
signing up to be an assistant team rep or volunteering wherever you can. Our next booster club/parent meeting is on Wednesday, July 12, at 7pm in the
school library.
Hope to see you there!
