West Potomac Updates No. 37

Wolverine Community,

Can you believe it?  We have ahead of us the final week of the 2016-17 school year.  While I know underclassmen are studying hard this weekend preparing for final exams and projects, the excitement is high as our Class of 2017 will be celebrated over the coming days, to conclude at Eagle Bank Arena on Wednesday.  In the past few months serving as your Interim Principal, I’ve been amazed at the qualities of the Class of 2017 and know that the future is bright as this class begins their next chapter.

The week ended with some wonderful news as we welcomed the next principal of West Potomac High School, Ms. Tangy Millard.  Ms. Millard and I will work closely over the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition.  I know the entire administrative team is excited for a busy summer of planning to ensure the 2017-18 school year has a wonderful start.

While there is only a short time left in the school year, I do want to remind you of an important event this week and some ways that we hope you will consider supporting.  Our PTSA is in the final phases of planning the Class of 2017 All Night Grad Party and need your help!

How can you support?  There are many opportunities to volunteer at the event (check-in/check-out, set up, clean up, work the casino or even be the Master of Ceremonies) or with selling tickets prior to the event.  Volunteering is not just for senior parents, but open to all!  You can review those volunteer options here.  If your schedule doesn’t allow you to volunteer, please consider donating a gift card ($20-$25).  If your senior has not picked up their ticket yet, All Night Grad tickets can still be purchased online at: angcwestpotomac.com  The celebration is Wednesday, June 21, 10:00 pm to 2:00 am at Belle Haven Country Club. I’m grateful for the All Night Grad Committees work to plan a wonderful and safe event for our Class of 2017.

Finally, just a few logistical reminders that Monday, Tuesday and Thursday we dismiss at 12:10pm.  There is no school Wednesday as we celebrate the Class of 2017 with Graduation beginning at 930am at Eagle Bank Arena on the campus of George Mason University.  Friday, the last day of the 2016-17 school year, we will dismiss at 10am.  A reminder the final week schedule is available here: https://westpotomachs.fcps.edu/announcements/end-year-testing-calendar

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend.

Dale Rumberger

Interim Principal

Wolverine Green Update

What a remarkable year for the Wolverine Green outdoor classroom! We want to thank all the people who have made this dream a reality. This school project represents the strength of our community, where a small group of people led the way and hundreds of people supported the endeavor.

In our Oktoberfest, Bike-A-Thon and Earth Day celebrations, we raised the funds and built the outdoor classroom, and then installed the water and electricity and planted 33 Virginia native trees. Our teachers and students in ecology, biology, environmental science, fine art, history, English, and technology classes are using the space every day. Students are acting out Romeo and Juliet, discussing world religions, and learning 19th century history outdoors.

Our Chick-Fil-A fundraiser was a huge success last week. We sold out in two hours and raised $1,100; all proceeds help fund the water and electricity.

What’s Next? Phase 3, which includes a second planting of shrubs and plants. Stay tuned for more details.

Princess for a Night: A Royal Success

The Princess for a Night dress exchange was a great success this year. Over 90 girls from West Potomac attended and picked up 74 dresses and some 100 pieces of jewelry, plus shoes, make-up and evening bags. Thanks to Top It Off for once again donating beautiful jewelry. And, most especially, thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who contributed many hours to making this event a success.

End of Year: All Monies Due

All financial obligations must be paid in order for students to participate in end-of-year activities including prom and graduation. Payments can be made by cash and must be for the exact amount; no change will be provided. Student Obligation Payments may be made in the main office.
